First Workshop for New Provincials

November 5, 2001

The first gathering of new provincials and major superiors was very successful.  The agenda for the day began with Fr. Virginio Bressanelli, the Superior General, speaking words of welcome and encouragement as he always does so graciously.  He identified the role of superior as a formator of Dehonian life, an animator much more than an administrator, a builder of unity who creates a climate conducive to sharing responsibility.

Members of the General Council "highlighted" some important information for provincials to be aware of; such as, the reports that contain the data of the Province membership.  Be sure distinctions are clear and accurate  (e.g., SCJs in temporal vows should make a clear choice about becoming a cleric or brother but knowing that choice can change).   Sending the reports regularly gives us better information on the Congregation.  Attention was also given to those who depart the Congregation or ask for time to discern their vocation by way of leave of absence or exclaustration.  Besides understanding the general and particular laws that apply to these situations, Father General spoke of the importance of the provincial "accompanying" the SCJ.  Having clear expectations and time limits are helpful and healthy.

Later in the afternoon, speakers from the Holy See gave us some in-depth information on the process of laicization of priests and the various aspects we need to be sure are observed.

The day was long for those of us still feeling some "jet lag" but the support and encouragement from Father General and the General Curia were greatly appreciated.

Finally, we left with the "first draft" of the Manuale Per I Superiori Provinciali.  The 66 pages of laws and guidelines, sample letters and forms, information for provincials and councilors deserves the name "draft."  It hasn't reached a "finished" state yet.  It also should become so much more valuable as the experiences of provincial leadership are added to the manual.
