Carissimi confratelli,

la nostra presenza dehoniana in Madagascar è stata ed è tuttora significativa per la Chiesa malgascia: prova ne sia che, a distanza di alcuni mesi, il Santo Padre ha voluto nominare un altro dehoniano a Vescovo, nella persona del Padre Gaetano Di Pierro.

P. Di Pierro, membro della Regione Malgascia e d'origine della Provincia Italiana del Centro Sud, Vicario Generale della Diocesi di Ambatondrazaka, viene ora promosso a Vescovo Ausiliare di quella stessa Diocesi.

È questo ancora un segno di stima e di benevolenza per i nostri confratelli italiani e portoghesi, che già da venticinque anni operano in quella Regione missionaria. P. Di Pierro fa parte del primo gruppo di missionari dehoniani italiani, giunti in Madagascar il 4 ottobre 1975. I confratelli portoghesi vi giungeranno nel gennaio 1982, e fra essi p. Alfredo Caires, il nuovo Vescovo di Mananjary.

Questa nomina è anche un attestato di riconoscimento personale verso il Padre Gaetano Di Pierro. Già dai primi anni di missione, egli si caratterizzò per il pieno adattamento agli usi e costumi della vita malgascia, vivendo povero fra i poveri, facendosi malgascio fra i malgasci, studiando e immedesimandosi in quella cultura. Già diversi anni fa, a detta di missionari di altri Istituti religiosi, Padre Gaetano aveva cessato di vivere al modo europeo per inculturarsi pienamente nel mondo malgascio.

P. Gaetano Di Pierro, nato il 1 dicembre 1948 ad Orta Nova (Foggia &endash; Italia), ha emesso la prima Professione il 29.9.1965 a Foligno, la Professione perpetua il 25.9.1971 a Frascati, ed è stato ordinato sacerdote il 29.6.1975 a Roma, in Piazza S. Pietro, da Paolo VI. Ha frequentato il Seminario minore ad Andria, il liceo filosofico a Foligno e lo Scolasticato teologico al Centro Giovanni XXIII di Frascati, ottenendo la licenza in teologia presso la Pontificia Università Lateranense di Roma e la specializzazione in missiologia alla Pontificia Università Gregoriana di Roma.

In Madagascar ha ricoperto diversi incarichi: Superiore del Gruppo italiano, ed ora Vice-Superiore Regionale della Regione MAD; responsabile del Distretto missionario di Andreba, responsabile del Centro catechistico nazionale della Chiesa malgascia, oltre ad altri incarichi diocesani.

Con la nomina a Vescovi dei due confratelli, la nostra Regione del Madagascar viene però privata di persone valide per la formazione e per l'evangelizzazione; questo è un momento delicato, che dovrebbe risvegliare nei giovani religiosi delle due Province IM e LU uno slancio missionario per ricoprire i posti vacanti.

Giungano ai confratelli del Madagascar e della Provincia Italiana del Centro Sud, come ai familiari del Padre Gaetano Di Pierro, gli auguri da parte del nostro Superiore Generale, ora in visita pastorale alla Provincia degli US. A questi auguri unisco i miei personali e il ricordo nella preghiera al Cuore di Gesù, perché renda fruttuoso il nuovo servizio pastorale al quale Padre Di Pierro è stato ora chiamato.

Dear Brothers,

Our Dehonian presence in Madagascar has been and remains very significant for the Malagasy Church. That was shown several months ago and now once again as the Holy Father has named another Dehonian as bishop, Fr. Gaetano Di Pierro.

Fr. Di Pierro is a member of the Region of Madagascar and was originally from the South Italian Province. Currently serving as the vicar-general of the diocese of Ambatondrazaka, he has been named its auxiliary bishop.

Once again it shows the high regard in which our Italian and Portuguese brothers are held in a region in which they have served for the past 25 years. Fr. Di Pierro was a member of the first group of Italian SCJs to arrive in Madagascar on October 4, 1975. Their Portuguese brothers arrived in January 1982; among this group was Fr. Alfredo Caires, the new bishop of Mananjary.

This appointment also recognizes the personal qualities of Fr. Gaetano Di Pierro. Early on as a missionary he has been able to adapt himself to the customs and ways of the people: living among the poor, becoming a Malagasy among the Malagasy, striving and succeeding in immersing himself in the local culture. Missionaries from other religious Institutes for a number of years have remarked that Fr. Gaetano had ceased being European and so has inculturated himself in the Malagasy reality.

Fr. Gaetano Di Pierro, was born on December 1, 1948 at Orta Nova (Foggia, Italy). He made his first profession on September 29, 1965 at Foligno, and his final vows on September 25, 1971 at Frascati. He was ordained a priest

on June 29, 1975 at Rome, in St. Peter_s Square by Pope Paul VI. He had studied at the minor seminary in Andria, did his philosophy studies at Foligno and his theology at the John XXIII Center in Frascati . He obtained a licentiate in

theology from the Lateran University in Rome, and specialized in missiology at the Gregorian University also in Rome.

His duties in Madagascar have included serving as the superior of the Italian group. Currently he is currently serving as vicar-superior of the SCJ Region of Madagascar. He is in charge of the district mission at Andreba and responsible for the national catechetical center, in addition to other duties in the diocese.

With the naming of two of our confreres to the episcopate our region in Madagascar loses two individuals involved in formation work and for evangelization. It is a delicate moment that ought to stir young religious with missionary designs in the South Italian and Portuguese Provinces to consider taking their place.

We pass on to our brothers in Madagascar and our South Italian province, along with Fr. Gaetano Di Pierro's family the greetings of Fr. General who is currently on his pastoral visit to the US Province. To his I add my own congratulations and pray the Sacred heart will render fruitful the pastoral service to which Fr. Di Pierro has been called.
