G8: Everyone in Genoa Including Men and Women Religious
for Debt Forgiveness

The appeal of Sister Patrizia and document to be signed
and underwritten by 77 congregations.

Rome (Italy), June 9th (VID) - A "Coalition of Religious" along with other bodies has been formed to fight the foreign debt of poor countries in recent years and now, on the eve of the G8 di Genoa (20-22nd of July) where indebtedness will be an important issue, Sister Patrizia, of the Missionary Institute of the Consolata is inviting religious and nuns to participate with the People of Seattle in the great event. "In solidarity with the 800 million people, men, women and children who every day suffer and become ill owing to the deprivations imposed on them by the structural adjustments of the International Monetary Fund" prayer and fasting will be at the heart of the presence being proposed to all missionaries and religious in the days in which the G8 takes place. In the Franciscan Church of St .Antonio di Boccadasse there will be uninterrupted ecumenical vigils, fasting and praying. Making this appeal her own, Sister Patrizia, the Missionary review of the Combonians "Nigrizia" has dedicated a special service to the topic called "Leave the Convents, Come to Genoa". The review gives information about an interreligious appeal-document prepared for the G8 leaders entitled "For An Economic Justice in Favor of Impoverished Countries". It has until now been underwritten by 77 congregations and is being submitted for the signature of individual religious. It is calling for the cancellation of the entire debt including that owed to the World Bank and the IMF, the end of structural adjustment programs, the creation of a fair arbitrator, with the collaboration of civil society.
