Cari fratelli e sorelle,

con grande dolore vi annuncio che oggi, 21 agosto 2002, alle ore 16.30, é morto nella nostra Casa di Bolognano (TN), P. OLIVIERO GIUSEPPE GIRARDI SCJ.

Colpito da un tumore maligno, era stato ricoverato a Bolognano dal 25 luglio scorso. E’ spirato nelle mani del superiore della comunità, P. Flavio Tonin, assistito anche da Fr. Samuele Cugini e dagli infermieri.
Nato a Malo (VI), Italia, il 15 settembre 1921, ed entrato alla Scuola Apostolica di Trento alla età di 9 anni, professò il 29 settembre 1937 e venne ordinato sacerdote il 14 luglio 1946. Ha studiato poi nell’Ateneo Lateranense di Roma ottenendo il dottorato “in utroque iure” nel 1950.

Di spiccata personalità, lavoratore competente ed instancabile, si distinse come uomo saggio e lucido, figlio fervente della Chiesa, religioso fedele e confratello pienamente identificato con il progetto e la spiritualità di P. Dehon, servendo generosamente la Congregazione durante tutta la sua vita. Una vita segnata dalla fede teologale, dalla speranza che non delude e dalla carità apostolica, fin dalla sua famiglia

Ha ricoperto diversi uffici ecclesiastici, tra cui: Assistente dei Fanciulli di Azione Cattolica Italiana (A.C.I.) presso il Centro Nazionale (1949); Assistente Centrale Unione Donne di A.C.I. (1956); Consulente religioso e docente di formazione per Maestre di noviziato e juniorato presso l’ Unione Superiore Maggiori Italiane (USMI); Membro della Commissione di Studio, Ufficio Conferenze dei Religiosi, presso la Congregazione per gli Istituti di Vita Consacrata e le Società di Vita Apostolica (CIVCSVA); Membro del Centro di Orientamenti Pastorali.

Ha prestato un pregevole servizio a molte Congregazioni ed Istituti Secolari, soprattutto femminili, che gli hanno richiesto consulenza ed accompagnamento nell’adeguamento delle loro costituzioni o statuti, e nel rinnovamento auspicato dal Concilio Vaticano II. Veniva spesso chiamato a dare conferenze, corsi, ritiri, o ad animare spiritualmente la celebrazione di Capitoli Provinciali e Generali.

E’ stato promotore della “missione sacerdotale”, o incontri di fraternità sacerdotale, elaborando anche sussidi per la scuola degli animatori di quella iniziativa. Faceva questo, animato dal nostro carisma che, nella tradizione di P. Dehon e di P. Prévot, ha sostenuto la formazione e specializzazione del clero.

Ma per noi, dehoniani, ha un particolare peso all’interno della nostra Congregazione e della intera Famiglia Dehoniana. Oltre i notevoli servizi svolti nella sua Provincia, tra cui quello di Superiore Provinciale (1957-1963), di consigliere provinciale, superiore locale, professore di teologia morale e diritto, ecc.., ha avuto anche un ruolo significativo per tutto l’Istituto come Consigliere Generale (1967-1979), Procuratore Generale presso la Santa Sede (1979-1998), Postulatore Generale delle Cause (1981 fino ad oggi). A lui dobbiamo che le cause dei nostri “santi” (soprattutto di P. Dehon, di P. Prévot, del Beato Giovanni Maria della Croce, ...) siano avanzate notevolmente in questi ultimi anni, grazie al suo intelligente lavoro di ricerca, di precisione, di rigore storico e di competenza nell’elaborazione delle rispettive Positio. A Roma è stato l’ideatore ed il promotore del raggruppamento delle cause dei Martiri di Valencia, ubicando in un quadro ecclesiale molto significativo, la figura del nostro Beato.

E’ stato anche postulatore di altre cause, legate a delle Congregazioni Religiose o a delle Diocesi. Fu il primo istruttore nell’avvio della causa di Alcide De Gasperi.

Ha scritto libri, articoli, sussidi, relazioni su P. Dehon e su temi riguardanti la nostra spiritualità e missione nella Chiesa, come anche sul ruolo dei laici nella Chiesa e nel mondo: in un primo tempo animando l’Associazione Riparatrice, successivamente dando un particolare appoggio allo sviluppo, organizzazione e coordinazione della Famiglia Dehoniana, nella pluralità delle sue componenti.

A nome del Governo Generale SCJ e di tutta la Famiglia Dehoniana, ringrazio il Signore per il dono che ci ha fatto con la vita, la vocazione e la missione cui ha chiamato P. Girardi. Lo raccomando alla preghiera di tutti. Particolari suffragi gli spettano da parte della sua comunità di Roma I e II, e da parte della sua Provincia. A norma di quanto viene indicato nel DG 69,3 della nostra Congregazione, invito ogni comunità della Congregazione a celebrare almeno una Messa in suo suffragio.

I suoi funerali verranno celebrati a Bolognano (TN), nella Cappella della nostra casa, il prossimo venerdì 23 agosto 2002 alle ore 14.30, data in cui ricorre il 66° anniversario del martirio del nostro Beato Giovanni Maria della Croce, alla cui intercessione P. Girardi si è affidato con piena fiducia sino all’ultimo momento della sua vita.

Faccio le mie condoglianze a tutti i suoi famigliari e alla Provincia IS, che l’hanno reso generosamente disponibile al servizio di tutta la Congregazione e di molti organismi della Chiesa. Il Cuore di Gesù ricambi la loro generosità venendo incontro a tutte le loro aspettative e moltiplicando vocazioni simili.

A tutti i membri della Famiglia Dehoniana auguro che il ricordo di P. Oliviero G. Girardi sia di stimolo e di forza per vivere con generosità la grazia di essere figli spirituali di P. Dehon, eredi della sua stessa passione per il Cuore di Gesù e per l’accoglienza del suo Regno nelle anime e nelle società.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

With a sense of profound grief I want to announce to you that today, August 21, 2002 at 4:30 pm Fr. Olivieno Giuseppe Girardi, scj died at our house at Bolognano (Trento).

Afflicted with a malignant tumor, he was being cared for at Bolognano since July 25. He died in the arms of the superior, Fr. Flavio Tonin who was assisted by Br. Samuele Cugini and resident nurses.

Born at Malo (VI) Italy on 15 September, 1921, he entered our Apostolic School of Trento when he was nine and made his profession on 29 September, 1937. He was ordained priest on 14 July, 1946 and then studied at the Lateran University in Rome receiving a doctorate “in utroque iure” in 1950.

Possessing a sharply defined personality and an untiring and competent worker, he distinguished himself as a wise and lucid man devoted to the Church; he was a faithful religious and fully identified with the enterprise and spirituality of Fr. Dehon. He served the congregation throughout his entire life which was marked by a theological faith, a hope without delusions, and apostolic charity from the time he first came to us.

He fulfilled various ecclesiastical responsibilities: adjutant for Children of Italian Catholic Action (ACI) at the National Center (1949); adjutant for the Central Alliance for Women of the ACI (1956), religious consultant and instructor in the formation of Women Novice Mistresses and Juniorate Directors for the Union of Italian Major Superiors (USMI); member of the Study Commission at the Office of Conferences of Religious at the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CIVCSA); finally, he was also member of the Center for Pastoral Direction.

He furnished a priceless service to many religious congregations and secular institutes, particularly those of women, who asked his help and advice in preparing their constitutions or statutes and in the kind of renewal sought by Vatican Council II. He was frequently asked to give conferences, courses, retreats or to help direct provincial and general chapters.

He help promote “priestly missions” or meetings of fraternal priestly organizations, helping to set up assistance for a school which trained animators to this special end. He did all this in the spirit of our charism which, in the tradition of Fr. Dehon and Fr. Prévot, gave support to formation and specialization among the clergy.

In particular, for us Dehonians, he had a special impact within the congregation and within the Dehonian family. Beyond the notable services he rendered to his province as provincial superior from 1957-1963, provincial councilor, local superior, professor of moral theology and canon law, etc., he also fulfilled important roles for the entire institute as general councilor (1967-1979), procurator general to the Holy See (1979-1998), general postulators of causes (1981-to the present). It is to him that we owe the advancement of the causes of our “saints” (particularly Fr. Dehon, Fr. Prévot, and Blessed Juan de la Cruz) because of his intelligent, precise, rigorous and competent research work in the formulation of their respective positios. He originated and promoted the notion of grouping together all the causes of the Martyrs of Valencia and placing the person of our Blessed in this significant church group. He was also the postulator of other causes given him by various religious congregations or dioceses. He was the first person to set in motion the cause of Alcide De Gaspari.

Fr. Girardi wrote books, articles, study aids, reports on Fr. Dehon and on topics related to our spirituality and mission in the church, including the role of the laity in the church and in the world. At the outset he was the director of the Association of Reparation; later he give particular assistance to the development, organization, and coordination of component elements of the Dehonian Family.

In the name of the SCJ General Administration and the entire Dehonian Family, I want to thank the Lord for the gift of the life, vocation, and mission to which He called Fr. Girardi. I recommend him to the prayers of all. Special suffrages are due him from the communities of Rome I and II and from his province. According to the norm found in GD 69, 3 of the Congregation, I invite each community of the congregation to celebrate at least one mass for his intention.

His funeral will be celebrated at Bolognano at its chapel on Friday, August 23, 2002 at 2:30 pm, the date which is also the 66^th anniversary of the martyrdom of Blessed Juan de la Cruz, to whose intercession Fr. Girardi confidently committed himself to the very last moment of his life.

I extend my condolences to all his family members and to the IS province which lent him so generously in service to the entire congregation and to many church organizations. May the Heart of Jesus reward their generosity by meeting their expectations and providing vocations similar in kind.

To all the members of the Dehonian Family I hope that the memory of Fr. Olivieno G. Girardi serve as a generous and grace-filled motivation and stimulus to be good sons and daughters of Fr. Dehon, heirs to the same passion for the Heart of Jesus and for the acceptance of his Kingdom in souls and in society.
