Following a lengthy struggle with his health, Fr. Frank Aresta, SCJ, died January 29 in Milwaukee, Wis. He was 62.

A native of Provincetown, Mass., Fr. Aresta entered the Priests of the Sacred Heart after seeing an advertisement for the community in the Sunday Visitor. "I was in the Air Force then and felt that something was missing from my life," he said when asked about his vocation years ago. "After awhile, I realized it was the religious community that I missed." His high school years were spent in a Franciscan minor seminary.

Although he ministered for several years in Africa and spent time studying and ministering in Canada, Fr. Aresta said that Wisconsin always felt like home for him. "Sacred Heart Monastery (in Hales Corners, Wis.) was my first assignment after professing vows in 1965. I was there for a year, spent another year working at our novitiate in Ste. Marie, Ill., but then ended up back in Hales Corners."

Drawn primarily to religious life, he was a brother with the community for 15 years before he was ordained to the priesthood. "I came to the community mainly because I wanted religious life," he said.

It was while he was serving as a missionary in Lesotho, Africa, that he began to feel a call to the priesthood. "I really enjoyed my work in the missions as a brother, but I felt that I could do much more as a priest, especially because there are not many priests in the missions. I would have been able to help with the sacramental needs of the area."

At the age of 40, Fr. Aresta left Africa to return to his home base of Hales Corners to study theology at Sacred Heart School of Theology. In 1981 he was ordained, and after an internship year at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary parish in Franklin, Wis. (now, St. Martin of Tours), Fr. Aresta was on a plane headed back to Africa. For several years he ministered in Port Elizabeth. However, there was a need for a canon lawyer in the diocese, so he volunteered to go back to school once again and earn a degree in canon law. He attended St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. Degree in hand, he was ready to return to South Africa, but a stress test revealed heart problems that necessitated surgery. The procedure was a success, but doctors advised Fr. Aresta to remain in the States.

So, he went back to his home base of Hales Corners where he assumed a variety of roles. He served in administration at Sacred Heart School of Theology, as provincial secretary and as mission secretary, taught at Sacred Heart School of Theology and at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and served as a chaplain to area hospitals.

In recent years, Fr. Aresta was spiritual director for the Province Development Office. He also served on the Marriage Tribunal for the archdiocese of Milwaukee.
