Fr. José Bairos Braga was a member of the first group of Portuguese scjs that went to Madagascar in 1981, where South Italian scjs were working. He dedicated his first years of priesthood to the scj mission in Mozambique. After studying the theology of religious life, in Rome (1992-1994) he worked in the formation program for the young scj religious from Madagascar. However, after 18 months he returned to Portugal because of poor heath. He died in the United States where he had gone to visit his family, as well as seek medical attention. Bishop. Antonio de Sousa Braga scj, bishop of Angra (Açores), his cousin, was the main celebrant at his funeral on November, 6th in East Providence, Rhode Island.
