P.Pietro De Franceschi lavorava a Pebane, un distretto collocato lungo la costa della Zambézia.

Lì operava come sacerdote e infermiere, dando un grande contributo nel servizio ai malati della cittadina.

Uno dei servizi frequenti che svolgeva, gratuitamente e generosamente, era il trasporto dei malati gravi (per i quali non c’era modo di essere curati a Pebane) verso l’ospedale di Mocuba o di Quelimane.

Così la mattina presto del giorno 30 gennaio si é messo al volante del Land Cruiser carico di persone e si é incamminato verso Mocuba, per trasportare una donna con seri problemi di parto e altri malati.

Verso le 6.30 é arrivato a Mocubela, circa 70 km da Pebane. Lì doveva affrontare la traversata di un ponte lungo e basso sull’acqua, senza protezioni laterali.

Ma la corrente impetuosa e il livello dell’acqua non permetteva il passaggio. Per cui si é rassegnato ed ha atteso che il livello diminuisse, fino a permettere l’attraversamento del ponte.

Nel corso della mattinata l’acqua é diminuita, facendo nascere la speranza di poter passare. Ma la gente del posto ancora non era fiduciosa che questo fosse consigliabile.

Verso le 14.30 P. Pietro ha deciso che non avrebbe atteso oltre, pressato dall’urgenza della situazione della donna malata.

Si é messo al volante della vettura ed ha iniziato la discesa fino al ponte.

Una volta arrivato alcuni passeggeri non se la sono sentita di restare a bordo e sono scesi: avrebbero raggiunto l’altra riva in canoa. Altri sono rimasti, in cabina un ragazzo e dietro altre 5 persone, tra cui la donna incinta.

P.Pietro si é messo in moto entrando nel ponte allagato da 80 cm di acqua. Piano piano é avanzato, ma dopo pochi metri ha battuto leggermente in un pilastrino di segnalazione del limite del ponte, che non si vedeva perché sommerso dall’acqua.

Questo ha fatto sì che la vettura facesse un piccolo balzo, sufficiente perché la corrente del fiume facesse scivolare la macchina nel letto del fiume. Così la macchina é stata travolta dalle acque.

Chi era dietro é saltato in acqua immediatamente: quattro persone si sono così salvate. La donna malata é scomparsa nel fiume.

Testimoni han raccontato che P. Pietro é riuscito a aprire la porta e uscire dalla macchina mentre sprofondava. Nel tentativo di nuotare é stato visto emergere tre volte e dopo é scomparso definitivamente nelle acque impetuose (e impietose).

La gente del posto, testimone impotente dell’accaduto, ha cercato di prestare aiuto, ma la corrente e l’altezza delle acque non hanno permesso di soccorrere i caduti in acqua. I superstiti sono riusciti ad aggrappassi a canne che spuntavano dal livello delle acque e sono stati ricuperati.

Il 31 gennaio i padri Toller, Sandro e Onorio, provinciale, insieme a Lucia De Franceschi, nipote di P. Pietro, si sono recati sul luogo dell’incidente.

Hanno potuto solo constatare la violenza delle acque, pur già diminuite di livello. Hanno anche visto il telone verde della macchina, sommersa e invisibile, ma legata dalla gente del posto a un pilastro del ponte.

Dal momento dell’incidente alcune imbarcazioni tradizionali (piccole canoe) percorrono il fiume con persone che cercano i corpi dei dispersi.

Oggi pomeriggio 1 febbraio é giunta la notizia che é stata recuperata la salma della donna. (Ma la difficoltà delle comunicazioni non ha permesso verificare la notizia.)

Le ricerche continuano.

Si spera di riuscire a ricuperare il corpo, che il fiume restituisca quanto ha portato via.

Fr. Pietro De Franceschi worked at Pebane, an area located along the border with Zambezi.

He worked as both priest and infirmarian, a great contribution to the sick of the region.

A part of this service was transporting (many in Pebane have no means of transport) the gravely ill, at no cost and with a generous spirit, to hospitals in Mocuba or Quelimane.

So on the morning of January 30^th he willing took his Land Cruiser loaded with people and began the trip toward Mocuba. Among the passengers was a pregnant woman with serious labor problems and another with malaria.

At about 06:30 they arrived in Mocubela, about 70 km (43.5 miles) from Pebane. They would have to cross a long bridge which is close to the water, and without side guards.

Due to the strong current and the high water it was not possible to pass. They would have to wait for the water level to recede in order to make a safe passage.

During the course of the morning the water level began to go down, giving hope that it would be possible to cross. However the locals did not believe that it was advisable to do so.

Around 2:30 in the afternoon Fr. Pietro made the decision he would have to give it a try given the urgent condition of the pregnant woman.

He sat behind the steering wheel and began his descent to the bridge.

At that point a number of the passengers thought better of it and got out. They would cross the river in a canoe. With the remaing five passagers in back plus a young boy and the pregnant woman in the cab Fr Pietro drove on to the bridge it was flooded over with 80 cm (2.62 ft) of water. Ever so slowly he made his advance, but after a short distance he tapped a bridge speed sign which he did not see since it was now under water.

Because of the strong current that small tap was enough to throw off the steering and sent the land cruiser into the river. It soon was filled with water.

Those in the back were thrown immediately into the water. Of these four were saved. The sick woman was lost in the river.

According to witnesses, Fr. Pietro was able to open the door and leave the land cruiser before it sank. In trying to swim he was seen to surface three times, and then was carried away by the raging waters.

The locals said they were powerless. They quickly looked to help, but the current and water level did not permit them to enter the water. The survivors clung to reeds that stuck out of the water until they were rescued.

On January 31^st Frs. Toller, Sandro and Onorio, provincial superior, together with Lucia De Franceschi, niece of Fr. Pietro, went to where the incident occurred.

Soon after the accident some people took traditional boats (really small canoes) into the river to search for the bodies of the missing.

On the afternoon of February 1^st word was received that they had recovred the body of the dead woman. However due to communications difficulties it is impossible to verify this at this time).

The search continues. It is hoped his body will be found and the river will give up those it had carried away.

Na manhã de 30 de janeiro saiu cedo levanto uma senhora grávida e mais outros doentes em sua Land Rover. Às 6:30 chegou a Mocubela. O rio estava muito alto, encobrindo a ponte.

Esperou até às 14:30 e decidiu atravessar por causa da urgência do caso da mulher grávida. A maioria dos passageiros desceu do carro, com medo. Iam atravessar de canoa. Ficaram no carro a mulher grávida e mais algumas pessoas. Começou a travessia. Pelas tantas o carro virou na água. Quem pôde saiu logo do carro.

Testemunhas afirmam terem visto padre sair da camionete. Viram ele emergir três vezes antes de desaparecer nas águas impetuosas. Alguns conseguiram se agarrar em galhos e se salvaram. A mulher grávida morreu. Seu corpo foi achado. Até estes dias o corpo do padre não tinha sido encontrado, o carro, sim.

P. Franceschi tinha uma sobrinha médica, que trabalhava com ele, na condição de voluntária.
