Interview with Amy Bach ESL Program Instructor

Amy Bach worked with the ESL (English as a Second Language) Program this summer. This was her first experience working with the SCJs, and also her first experience working in the environment of the ESL Program, at Sacred Heart Monastery/Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

Amy had to finish her teaching in the ESL summer course at the end of August because of her commitment to the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where she also teaches English. Still, this summer provided her with a new professional and personal experience.

1.- Amy, can you tell us what this professional experience in the ESL Program has meant to you during this summer?

    Working at Sacred Heart this summer was a wonderful experience.  Never before have I worked with such dedicated and motivated students.  Their enthusiasm both in and out of the classroom motivated me to create lessons that would satisfy their desire to learn.  For a teacher, having a group of students like this is a memorable experience.  Seeing students delight in learning reminds me of why I decided to become a teacher.
 

2.- The ESL experience, besides the academic teaching of English, also includes being in contact with people from different countries and different cultures. Can you talk to us about what you've learned from this multicultural contact?

    I enjoy working in a multicultural setting.  This is one of the reasons I chose to become an ESL teacher.  When I work with students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, I also learn. Being exposed to different cultures and viewpoints gives me a better understanding of the world.  It also teaches me about myself.  Being exposed to different cultures causes me to reflect on my culture and myself and helps me to understand it in a new way.

3.- Another characteristic of the ESL Program run by the SCJs is that most of the students are religious, and this summer most of them were SCJs. What have you observed from the variety of personalities and world viewpoints?

    When you unite a group of people from different cultural backgrounds, you will naturally get a variety of different world views in different ways of seeing and understanding the world.  But because of the different life experiences many of the students in the ESL program have had working and living in countries other than their own, their viewpoints were truly unique.

4.- Finally, can you tell us about your own projects for the future, and the influence that this summer ESL experience has had on you?

I really enjoyed myself this summer.  It was refreshing and uplifting to work with such good people.   I hope I will be able to return to Sacred Heart to teach in the summer program next summer.  As far as future plans, I have been considering returning to school to further specialize my training in the teaching of reading and writing in a second language.  Three years of professional teaching in ESL have sparked my interest in these two areas.  I am an avid reader and I am a writer.  I want to help my students use writing as a tool to express their thoughts and creativity.  I also want to help my students discover the joy of reading and to help them improve their second language reading and writing skills.

Amy Bach ha lavorato nel corso estivo di quest'anno all'ESL (Inglese come seconda lingua). Era la prima volta che lavorava con gli SCJ e anche la sua prima esperienza di insegnamento nel Corso ESL, al Sacred Heart Monastery/Sacred Heart of Theology ad Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

Amy ha dovuto terminare il suo insegnamento nel corso estivo di ESL alla fine di agosto a causa del suo impegno all'Università di Wisconsin a Milwaukee, dove lei insegna inglese. Questa estate tuttavia le ha fornito una maggior professionalità e una nuova esperienza personale.

1. - Amy, ci può dire quale esperienza professionale ha acquisito nel Corso ESL durante questa estate?

Lavorare al Sacro Cuore questa estate è stata un'esperienza meravigliosa. Non ho mai lavorato prima con studenti così impegnati e motivati. Il loro entusiasmo mi ha spinto in classe e fuori mi a creare lezioni che soddisfacessero il loro desiderio di imparare. Per un insegnante, avere un tale gruppo di studenti è un'esperienza memorabile. Vedere studenti gioiosi di imparare mi hanno fatto ricordare il motivo per cui sono diventata una insegnante.

2. - L'esperienza ESL, oltre l'insegnamento accademico dell'inglese, comprende anche il

contatto con persone da paesi diversi e di culture diverse. Può parlarci di quello che Lei ha imparato da questo contatto pluriculturale?

È un piacere lavorare in un ambiente pluriculturale. Questa è una delle ragioni che mi hanno spinto a divenire un insegnante di ESL. Quando io lavoro con studenti che presentano una varietà di sfondi etnici, imparo anch'io. vedendo culture e punti di vista diversi ho una migliore comprensione del mondo. Questo mi fa riflettere anche su me stessa.. Il contatto con culture diverse mi fa riflettere sulla mia cultura e mi aiuta a capirla in un modo nuovo.

3. - Un'altra caratteristica del Corso di ESL gestito dagli SCJ è che la maggior parte degli studenti sono religiosi, e questa estate la maggior parte di loro erano SCJs. Cosa ha ci può dire sulla varietà delle personalità e dei punti di vista così diversi e mondiali?

Quando si riunisce un gruppo di persone di sfondi culturali diversi, si può trovare naturalmente una varietà di prospettive diverse e di modi diversi di vedere e di capire il mondo. Ma a causa della diversità di esperienza, molti degli studenti del corso ESL si trovano a lavorare e vivere il contesti diversi dal loro e quindi le loro prospettive sono realmente uniche.

4. - Può dirci infine dei suoi progetti per il futuro, e quale influsso questa esperienza estiva di ESL ha avuto in lei?

Io ho veramente goduto questa estate. Mi sentivo realmente sollevata nel lavorare con persone così buone. Io spero di poter ritornare al Sacro Cuore ad insegnare nel programma d'estate del prossimo anno.. Per quanto riguarda i miei piani futuri, io sto pensando di ritornare a scuola a specializzarmi sul metodo di insegnamento, per la lettura e lo scritto nella seconda lingua. Tre anni di insegnamento professionale in ESL hanno accresciuto il mio interesse in queste due aree. Mi piace leggere e scrivere.. Io voglio aiutare i miei studenti ad usare la scrittura come uno strumento per esprimere i loro pensieri e la loro creatività. Io voglio aiutare anche i miei studenti a scoprire la gioia di leggere ed aiutarli a migliorare la loro seconda lingua, sviluppando le abilità del leggere e dello scrivere.
