PROVINCIAL
CONFERENCE
(Monday
27th - Wednesday 29th September 1999)
MOVING FORWARD IN HOPE: Dublin
David Marsten (BI)
3rd year theology student, Dublin
Much time in the last administration was
centered around our ministry and life together in Dublin. This centred
around a possible move from Inchicore or possible refurbishment of 66,
and possible move to Seven Oaks. We need to explore things afresh>
-
Inchicore has served us well as a house of
formation. At the moment we have one student, David Marsden, who is completing
his second year of theology, Bro Liam who is pursuing a course of studies;
Fr. Bobby as Formation Director, and Fr. James Lawless, Promotions Office.
-
To mark our Jubilee as a Province, and as an
expression of 'We the Congregation', we offered to provide burses to other
confreres in the Congregation. This summer Fr. Zenon who has finished two
years in Dublin learning English and following a spirituality course in
Milltown, goes to our Finnish Mission. Also we have Fr. Thomas and Fr.
John from our Indonesian Province, who will complete a two year stay with
us, summer 2000. Part of the vision behind this strategy, to provide a
welcome support for our own students.
-
In the past, we have rightly argued the need
to keep the house of formation distinct from the parish, in this care Ardlea.
Two very different ministries, and for the obvious reasons.
-
But we are now in a different situation, due
to the Province, it is time to reflect on our best way to be present in
Ireland
Possible way forward:
To sell the house at Inchicore, and to
relocate to the parish of Ardlea.
-
To do this in the next two years.
-
To seek a four/five bed roomed house.
-
To reduce the parish to two priests.
-
To form one community, to create a significant
presence in the local Church. We have reached a time when we will have
to be flexible and creative in our use of one another, playing to the skills
and aptitudes of each. By creating a certain fluidity, where the people
in such a community can make a contribution to both aspects of the work
- as formation house and parish.
-
Flexibility will be important, such a process
will need to be inclusive, making provision to use the richness of the
semiretired and retired.
-
There is a need to consider, and if possible
choose, collaborators. There are two other religious communities in the
parish. They, like us, are reduced in numbers. Maybe we can seek ways of
working together, and thus witness to the vitality of religious life, and
commitment.
-
Flexibility may be necessary in the way we
approach formation in the future;
a) the need to take part in an international
or inter-Congregational novitiate for the welfare of the applicant himself.
b) to be open to send any students to
other situations, e.g., Brussels, Scotus College (Glasgow).
-
We could consider the opportunities open to
us of continuing to offer burses to overseas confreres. It would give an
international dimension to our parish in Dublin, and people exposure to
the richness of SCJ life.
But whatever steps we take together
-
will have to realistic,
-
will call for adjustment to change,
-
will be a stepping forward in hope
-
and there will be an element of risk
Whatever future path we choose has to be rooted
in real community life of quality and be part of a Province process of
creating significant community. We have to become focused on living and
working together.
