When two people first meet each other, a new history arises from the common discovery and effort and in living in the awareness that each individual is called to make his/her own contribution. This is done in the hope that "if every small man does his small thing in his small world, the big world will change" (Italian proverb) and most certainly we will leave it in a slightly better state than when we found it (Lord Baden Powell).

Having met the Albanians and having shared our lives with them and their joys, dreams, sufferings, we begin to consider "how" we had to enter into a new culture. Certainly, still basic is the need to be aware of the real needs of the Albanians and of their legitimate expectations so as to avoid leaving Italy with the desire to do good to others and all the while seeking our own personal good in reality. This may bring gratification at a personal level and make us feel less guilty about having so much wealth and therefore able to share it in great tranquillity because it is ours to dispose of.

Becoming aware of our Albanian brothers, however, is basic. An attentive listener is prepared to walk with and share whatever he or she has that is precious and beautiful. An attentive listener is prepared to discount the manifold contradictions that the Albanians take along and thus begin to work toward recovering their lost dignity and making up for their sufferings which furrow the faces of even the youngest. It is obvious to everyone that the Albanians will not be deluded with promises and dreams that will probably never come to pass; it is necessary to promote in them a desire for deliverance, the aspiration for being the protagonists for growth of their own country. Certainly, they will need our help, financial assistance, encouragement, but indirectly, because they need to recover confidence in their own abilities. The more the Albanians become confident in themselves, the more they as a people will be able to trust the world. Bringing this about is not an easy task. All of us have had experiences where, despite the proclamation of our good intentions, we had to carry out certain tasks with great diplomacy. These eventually helped us grow in our commitment to service.

It was necessary for us to leave Italy with clear ideas and definite tasks to accomplish. We had to constantly check our group activities to see if they were helpful for mutual growth, appreciation, and affection. We had to pray together even when we were extremely tired at the end of the day to recapture and awaken the reasons we were there in the first place. Making arrangements for times of reflection and work with young Albanians was the way we discovered our mutual enrichment. I believe that in the future we need to find some project that runs on the wheels of young Albanian directors themselves; by way of formation, they need to learn what their own talents and abilities are and should not be mere imitators of what we show them. A lot remains to be done and maybe we suffered a little bit with what we had to deal with, not knowing if we were truly sharing their plight; we have no intentions of throwing in the towel, or of avoiding future visits, or of not helping from afar, from Italy.

Each one of us had hands on experience of the tremendous needs of these brothers. The school at Alk is finished, but the one at Gurëz, home for 500 children is crumbling and overwhelmed with inhuman conditions; many kids at Fushe Kuqë have problems holding a pencil in their hands. The young people at Gorrè are waiting for their chance to get involved. You, our dear volunteers, have to accept the challenge we face in the hope of freeing man from the injustice that still runs through the veins of history.

Thank you, for your enthusiastic service. The seed cast into the furrows of the land of the eagles will produce an abundant harvest for the good of all. Thank you for your example of constancy and patience and do not forget the faces you passed on those dusty roads.

Quando due popoli si incontrano nasce una nuova storia tutta da inventare e da costruire, ma soprattutto da vivere nella consapevolezza che ognuno è chiamato a dare il proprio contributo: la speranza che ´se ogni piccolo uomo, nel suo piccolo mondo fa una piccola cosa, il mondo cambiaª (Proverbio italiano) e sicuramente lo lasceremo un po' migliore di come lo abbiamo trovato (cfr. Lord Baden Powell).

Aver incontrato il popolo albanese, aver condiviso con questi nostri fratelli un po' della loro vita, delle loro gioie, dei loro sogni, delle loro sofferenze… è stato necessario per comprendere "il come" bisogna accostarsi ad una nuova cultura. Sicuramente risulta ancora fondamentale l'ascolto previo dei reali bisogni degli albanesi e delle loro legittime attese, per evitare di partire dall'Italia con tanta voglia di fare del bene agli altri, mentre, in realtà, si cerca solo il proprio bene . Questo può gratificare a livello personale e forse ci farà sentire meno in colpa di essere figli di un benessere, trovato già pronto e quindi usufruirne tranquillamente perché ci appartiene.

L'ascolto dei fratelli albanesi risulta perciò fondamentale: l'ascolto è proprio di chi vuole camminare insieme e condividere quanto di bello e prezioso possiede. L'ascolto dà la possibilità di mettere a nudo le tante contraddizioni che gli albanesi si portano dietro e così iniziare a combattere per riconquistare la dignità mortificata e riempire i canali di sofferenza che solcano anche i volti dei più giovani. Sembra ormai scontato che gli albanesi non vanno illusi con promesse di sogni che probabilmente mai si realizzeranno, ma è necessario far nascere in loro il desiderio di un riscatto, il desiderio di essere protagonisti della crescita del loro paese. Il nostro appoggio non può certamente mancare, ma deve essere di sostegno, di aiuto anche economico, di incoraggiamento… di recupero della fiducia nelle loro potenzialità: più gli albanesi riacquistano fiducia in se stessi, più danno fiducia come popolo al mondo intero. Realizzare questo non è cosa facile e tutti abbiamo potuto sperimentare come, nonostante i buoni propositi, ci siamo trovati a gestire situazioni delicate che comunque sono state di aiuto a crescere nel nostro impegno di servizio.

Partire dall'Italia con idee chiare e con progetti concreti da realizzare è cosa da cui non si può prescindere. Verificare continuamente la nostra attività di gruppo è risultato utile per crescere nella conoscenza reciproca, nella stima e nell'affetto. Pregare insieme, anche quando si giungeva stanchissimi alla fine della giornata, ha ravvivato e risvegliato le motivazioni profonde del nostro stare lì. Organizzare i momenti di animazione e il lavoro manuale con gli altri giovani albanesi è stato il modo indovinato per arricchirsi a vicenda. Credo che per futuro sia da inventare un nuovo progetto che ruoti sulla formazione di giovani animatori albanesi, in modo da renderli più consapevoli delle loro capacità ed evitare che diventino semplici ripetitori di quanto gli comunichiamo. C'è ancora tanto da realizzare e se forse abbiamo anche sofferto un po' per le difficoltà incontrate staremo a vedere se realmente ci teniamo alla sorte di questi fratelli e così non getteremo la spugna, non escluderemo un prossimo ritorno e continueremo ad impegnarci anche da lontano, dall'Italia.

Ognuno di noi ha potuto toccare con mano le tante ed urgenti necessità di questi fratelli: la scuola di Alk è stata completata, ma quella di Gurëz, che ospita più di 500 bambini, è fatiscente e verte in condizioni indegne; numerosi bambini a Fushe Kuqë fanno difficoltà a tenere in mano una matita; i giovani di Gorrè aspettano di essere valorizzati e coinvolti: a noi carissimi volontari l'impegno di accettare questa sfida che va combattuta insieme nella speranza di liberare l'uomo dall'ingiustizia che ancora striscia nelle vene della storia.

Grazie per il vostro entusiasmante servizio: il seme buttato nei solchi della terra delle aquile produca abbondante raccolto per il bene di tutti. Grazie per il vostro esempio di costanza e pazienza… e non dimenticate i volti incrociati su quelle strade polverose!

Cuando dos personas se encuentran por primera vez, una nueva historia nace desde el descubrimiento y el esfuerzo común viviendo en vigilancia de que cada individuo está llamado a hacer su propia contribución. Esto se realiza en la esperanza de que "si cada pequeño hombre hace su pequeña cosa en este pequeño mundo, el gran mundo cambiará" (proverbio italiano) y más ciertamente dejaremos el mundo en una estado ligeramente mejor que como lo encontramos (Lord Baden Powell).

Habiendo encontrado a los Albaneses y habiendo compartido nuestras vidas con ellos y sus juegos, sueños, sufrimientos, comenzamos a comprender "cómo" llegábamos a entrar en una nueva cultura. Efectivamente, aún lo fundamental es estar vigilantes ante las necesidades reales de los albaneses y para sus legítimas expectativas para evitar que dejen Italia con la decisión de hacer el bien a otros mientras que en realidad buscan su propio beneficio. Esto puede traer gratificaciones a nivel personal y hacernos sentir menos culpables de tener mucha riqueza y por ello ser capaces de compartirla en gran tranquilidad porque podemos disponer de ella.

Al preocuparnos por nuestros hermanos albaneses, cualquier cosa es básica. Una atenta escucha es la preparación fundamental para caminar juntos y compartir lo bello y precioso que poseen. Una escucha atenta nos prepara para descontar las contradicciones que los albaneses han sufrido y comenzar a trabajar recobrando su dignidad perdida y acabar con el sufrimiento que marca los rostros de los más jóvenes. Es obvio para todo que los albaneses no serán engañados con promesas y sueños que probablemente nunca serán realidad; es necesario promover en ellos un deseo de liberación, la aspiración por ser los protagonistas del crecimiento de su propio país. Ciertamente, ellos necesitarán nuestra ayuda, asistencia financiera, animación, pero indirectamente, porque necesitan recobrar la confianza en sus propias habilidades. La mayoría de los albaneses llegan a confiar en ellos mismos, la mayoría de ellos será capaz de creer en el mundo. Hacer esto no es una cosa fácil. Todos nosotros tenemos experiencias donde, a pesar de nuestras buenas intenciones, hemos cargado con ciertos trabajos delicados. Esto eventualmente nos ayudó a crecer en nuestra capacidad de servicio.

Fue necesario para nosotros dejar Italia con ideas claras y tareas definidas a realizar. Tuvimos que chequear constantemente nuestras actividades de grupos para ver si estaban ayudando al crecimiento común, aprecio y afecto. Tuvimos que rezar juntos aunque estuviésemos extremadamente cansados al final del día para recapitular y vigilar las razones por las que estábamos en este sitio. Crear tiempos de organización, de reflexión y de trabajo con los jóvenes albaneses fue la manera en que descubrimos nuestro mutuo enriquecimiento. Creo que en el futuro necesitamos encontrar algunas proyectos que corran sobre las ruedas de la dirección de los jóvenes albaneses; por ejemplo de formación, necesitan aprender cuáles son sus propios talentos y habilidades y para no convertirse en meros imitadores de lo que nosotros les mostramos. Hay mucho por realizar y puede que suframos alguna mordida con lo que tenemos que repartir, sin saber si estuviésemos compartiendo realmente su compromiso; no tenemos intenciones de tirar la toalla, o de evitar futuras visitas, o de no ayudar desde lejos, desde Italia.

Cada una de nuestras manos tiene experiencia de la tremenda necesidad de estos hermanos nuestros. La escuela en Alk está finalizada, pero la de Gurëz, hogar de 500 niños está en ruinas y sumida en condiciones inhumanas; muchos niños en Fushe Kuqë tienen problemas para tener un lápiz en sus manos. La gente joven de Gorrè están esperando por su oportunidad  para ser involucrados. Ustedes, nuestros queridos voluntarios, tiene que aceptar el reto que les presentamos en la esperanza de la liberación del hombre de la injusticia que continúa corriendo a través de las venas de la historia.

Gracias por su entusiasta servicio. La siembra dentro de los surcos de la tierra de las águilas producirá una abundante cosecha para el bien de todos. Gracias por su ejemplo de constancia y paciencia y no olviden los rostros que pasaron frente a ustedes en esos caminos polvorientos.
