Sacred Heart's ESL Culture Fair started in 1996 because the ESL program had a rich diversity of culture and wanted to share it with the entire school body. The instructors had come to realize that many of the seminarians, faculty, and administration viewed the ESL program from a distance because they didn't have the opportunity to interact with the ESL students or to learn about the richness of their countries and their cultures.

The Culture Fair would be open to friends and to the school and would take place from 12:00 to 1:30 on Thursday and Friday when most students would be free and when most people would want to sample ethnic food and drink.

The instructors asked the ESL students to prepare exhibits of their countries. This proved a challenge for the students since everything had to be in English. These exhibits would be factual yet artistic representations of the cultures of each country. In addition to the exhibits, the students could prepare prayers or religious songs with translations; questions testing the geography and history of their country; examples of everyday language, idioms, and gestures; and demonstrations of games, the arts, sports, and dances. To add to this, students would bring music, artifacts, photos, videos, religious icons, ethnic clothing, and samples of money. Finally students would gather recipes and make samples of food that would best represent their countries.

The ESL Culture Fair-2000 was a huge success. Students worked for two weeks on their exhibits and elaborate menus were prepared. Countries represented were Indonesia, Poland, Brazil, Jamaica, Spain, Venezuela, Italy, Colombia, Cameroon, and Mexico.

Three days before, students started food preparation, and each morning before the Fair started, the students gathered in the school kitchen to cook. Besides having to translate recipes into English, the students had to learn all of the food they needed and all of kitchen utensils in English. This was especially difficult for students who had never cooked before.

There was different food for each day so that people could sample a rich variety of foods from each country. This year the menu included Tongseng, Pierogis, Churrasco, Curried Chicken, Seafood Paella, Tequeños, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Papas Chorreadas, Fried Sweet Potatoes, Chicken Molé, Sangria, Rum Punch, Caipirinha, and Coffee made from beans grown by the SCJs in Cameroon.

Many of the faculty, students, and administrators thought that this year's Culture Fair had the most elaborate exhibits and the best food and drink. Everyone was happy to have learned a little about the diverse cultures of the ESL students and to have had the opportunity to experience a small part of their world.

La Festa Culturale ESL ha avuto i suoi inizi nel 1996 perché il corso ESL aveva una grande ricchezza di cultura e intendeva condividerla con l'intera scuola. Gli istruttori si erano accorti che molti seminaristi, la facoltà, e l'amministrazione seguivano il programma ESL da lontano e non avevano l'opportunità di interagire con gli studenti dell'ESL o di conoscere le ricchezze dei loro paesi e delle loro culture.

La Fiera di Cultura si apre ad amici ed alla scuola e si svolge dalle 12.00 alle 13.30 il giovedì e il venerdì quando la maggior parte di studenti sono liberi e quando il maggior numero di persone può assaggiare cibi e bevande tipiche.

Gli istruttori chiedono agli studenti di ESL di preparare esposizioni sui loro paesi. Questo diviene una sfida per gli studenti perché tutto deve essere in inglese. Queste esposizioni devono poi riguardare i fatti, le rappresentazioni artistiche delle culture di ogni paese.

Oltre alle esposizioni, gli studenti devono preparare preghiere o canzoni religiose con traduzioni; una serie di domande sulla geografia e la storia del loro paese; esempi di lingua quotidiana, idiomi, e gesti; dimostrazioni di giochi, le arti, lo sport, e le danze. Inoltre gli studenti devono portare musica, manufatti, fotografie, video, icone religiose, abbigliamento tipico, ed esemplari di soldi. Finalmente gli studenti devono presentare ricette e cucinare piatti tipici che meglio rappresentano i loro paesi.

La Festa della Cultura di ESL-2000 ha avuto un successo enorme. Gli studenti hanno lavorato per due settimane sulle loro esposizioni e sono stati preparati menu elaborati. I Paesi rappresentati erano Indonesia, Polonia, Brasile, Giamaica, Spagna, Venezuela, Italia, Colombia, Camerun, e Messico. Tre giorni prima, gli studenti hanno iniziato la preparazione di cibo, ed ogni mattina prima della Fiera, gli studenti si sono ritrovati nella cucina della scuola per cucinare.

Oltre tradurre le ricette in inglese, gli studenti hanno dovuto imparare i nomi dei cibi e di tutti gli utensili di cucina in inglese. Questo è stato particolarmente difficile per studenti che non avevano cucinato mai prima. C'era cibo diverso per ogni giorno così che le persone hanno potuto assaggiare una ricca varietà di cibi da ogni paese. Quest'anno il menu ha incluso: Tongseng, Pierogis Churrasco, Pollo Ripieno, Frutti di mare, Tequeños, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Papas Chorreadas, Patate Dolci Fritte, Pollo Molé, Sangria, Punch di Rum, Caipirinha, e Caffè fatto con chicchi coltivati dagli SCJ in Camerun.

Molti della facoltà, studenti, ed amministratori hanno pensato che la Fiera della Cultura di quest'anno ha avuto le esposizioni più elaborate ed il miglior cibo e bevanda. Ognuno era felice di aver imparato qualcosa sulle culture diverse degli studenti di ESL ed avere avuto l'opportunità di esperimentare una piccola parte del loro mondo.

La Feria Cultural

La Feria Cultural (Culture Fair) del ESL en el Monasterio Sagrado Corazón comenzó en1996 ya que el programa ESL ten'a una rica diversidad de culturas y deseaba compartila con todo el cuerpo estudiantil. Las instructoras descubrieron que muchos de los seminaristas, profesores y personal administrativo ve'an el program ESL con cierta distancia, porque no hab'an tenido la oportunidad de interactuar con los estudiantes del ESL o de aprender sobre las riquezas de sus pa'ses y sus culturas.

El Culture Fair se habrir'a a los amigos y a la Escuela de Teolog'a y se realizar'a de 12:00 a 1:30 el jueves y viernes, cuando la mayor'a de los estudiantes estar'an libres y cuando la gente más querr'a probar la comida étnica y la bebida.

Las instructoras pidieron a los esutdiantes del ESL que prepararan exhibiciones de sus pa'ses de origen. Esto se convirtió en un reto para los estudiantes ya que todo ten'a que ser en Inglés. Estas exhibiciones ser'an sobre las realidades propias y las representaciones art'sticas de cada pa's. Además de las exhibiciones, los estudiantes podr'an preparar oraciones o canciones religiosas con traducciones, preguntas sobre geograf'a e historia de sus pa'ses, ejemplos de cada idioma, modismos y ademanes y demostraciones de juegos, arte, deporte y bailes. Además de todo esto, los estudiantes traer'an música, artefactos, fotos, videos, iconos religiosos, vestimentas étnicas y muestras de dinero. Finalmente, los estudiantes podr'an recoger recetas y hacer muestras de las comidas que mejor representen sus pa'ses.

El ESL Culture Fair-2000 fue un formidable éxito. Los estudiantes trabajaron durante dos semanas en sus exhibiciones y elaboraron los menús que se prepararon. Los pa'ses representados en este Culture Fair fueron Indonesia, Polonia, Brasil, Jamaica, España, Venezuela, Italia, Colombia, Camerún, y México.

Tres d'as antes los estudiantes comenzaron la preparación y cada mañana antes de que comezara la Feria, los estudiantes se reun'an en la cocina de la escuela para preparar sus comidas. Además de tener que traducir las recetas al inglés, los estudiantes tuvieron que aprender todo respecto a los ingredientes y los utensilios de cocina que necesitaban para preparar sus comidas. Esto fue especialmente dif'cil para los estudiantes que nunca hab'an cocinado antes.

Hubo diferentes tipos de comida de cada pa's. Este año, el menú incluyó Tongseng, Pierogis, Churrasco, Curried Chicken, Seafood Paella, Tequeños, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Papas Chorreadas, Papas Dulces Fritas, Molé de Gallina, Sangr'a, Ponche Crema, Caipirinha, Arepas, Tequeños y Café hecho con granos cultivados por los SCJ en Camerún.

Muchos de los estudiantes de la facultad y personal administrativo piensan que el Culture Fair de este año tuvo las más elaboradas exhibiciones y la mejor comida y bebida. Todos están felices de haber aprendido un poco sobre las diversas culturas de los estudiantes del ESL y de haber tenido la oportunidad de experimentar una pequeña parte de su mundo.
