PAGADIAN CITY&emdash;About 10 to 15 heavily armed men in fatigues Wednesday night abducted an Italian priest while he was taking supper in his parish church in the town of Dimataling in Zamboanga del Sur province on the southern Mindanao island, his superiors reported.

Zamboanga del Sur Bishop Zacarias Jimenez identified the victim as Father Giuseppi Piarantoni of the Sacred Heart of Fathers. "He was snatched by heavily armed men," Jimenez told reporters.

"We have no definite news about who they were,'' said Father Gerry Sheehy, Piarantoni's superior who is based in Manila.

"The men took him away in a twin-engine boat,'' Father Sheehy told the INQUIRER.

The bishop said Father Piarantoni was seized around 7:25 p.m. inside his parish church, Our Lady of Fatima Dimataling. He had just finished saying mass and was having dinner when the unidentified men barged in.

Father Piarantoni has been the parish priest of the coastal town of Dimataling in the western part of the province for more than three years. Forty percent of the town's residents are Muslims.

Father Sheehy told the INQUIRER that the 44 year-old Piarantoni, a native of Bologna, has been in Mindanao for the past 10 years.

Samson Ubay-Ubay, acting provincial police chief, said policemen from the 904th Mobile Group Company and soldiers of the 55th Infantry Battalion had been dispatched to track down the abductors.

Authorities believed that the suspects used the Illana Bay as escape route.

Ubay-Ubay and Jimenez would not speculate on the identities of the kidnappers.

On nearby Basilan Island, the Abu Sayyaf bandit group is holding nine Filipino hostages and an American Christian missionary couple, Martin and Gracia Burnham, and nine Filipino hostages.

Missionaries and businessmen are often targets of armed gangs in Mindanao.

In September, Irish priest Father Rufus Halley was ambushed by gunmen believed to be rogue members of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the town of Malabang in Cotabato province.

In the Sulu islands, American missionary Charles Walton and several Spanish nuns were abducted by Abu Sayyaf rebels in the early 1990s.

PAGADIAN CITY - Da 10 a 15 uomini armati, mercoledì sera, hanno sequestrato un prete italiano mentre stava cenando nella canonica della sua parrocchia di Dimataling a Zamboanga del Sur, nell'isola meridionale di Mindanao, secondo quanto riferito dai suoi superiori.

Zacaris Jimenez , vescovo di Zamboanga del Sur, ha detto che lo sfortunato è P. Giuseppe Pierantoni dei Padri del S. Cuore. "Egli è stato catturato da uomini molto armati", ha detto Jimenez ai giornalisti.

"Non abbiamo delle notizie precise su chi sono i rapitori" dice P. Gerry Sheehy, superiore di Pierantoni, che si trova a Manila.

"I rapitori l'hanno portato via con un motoscafo", ha detto P. Sheehy all'INQUIRER. Il vescovo ha detto che P. Nelle isole Sulu, il missionario Charles Walton e diverse suore spagnole sono state rapite dai ribelli di Abu Sayyaf all'inizio del 1990.

Si sospetta che i ribelli MILF abbiano rapito il prete iralndese Desmond hartford nel 1997 e il prete italiano Luciano Benedetti nel 1998 a Mindanao.
