May 1-3, over 180 people gathered at Sacred Heart Monastery/School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, for the third Mission Education Conference. First held in 1995, the conference is a time for North American lay employees and other collaborators to come together with SCJs to learn about the congregation, its spirituality and the charism of the founder. For many, it is an important opportunity to feel a part of something larger than just the particular ministry with which they are involved. It is also an occasion to more fully realize that together with the Priests of the Sacred Heart, they are following in the footsteps of a dream begun over a hundred years ago by Fr. Leo John Dehon.

Each day began and ended with prayer. In-between, presentations were made by the areas represented at the conference, including Anglo Canada and French Canada. Witness talks followed each of the presentations, with an individual sharing his or her personal story, or that of someone who had been active in the area. Two of these witness presentations were done by lay ministers sharing the stories of SCJs now deceased, but fondly remembered: Fr. Tom Sheehy, who ministered in Texas, and Fr. Bill De Witte, who was active in Ottawa, Canada.

Small group activities were also a part of the conference. It was a time to connect with people who do similar work and to share ideas. Computer specialists from Mississippi were talking with their counterparts in South Dakota and Wisconsin. Teachers from Houston, Texas met with teachers from Chamberlain, South Dakota, as well as Mississippi and Wisconsin. Parish staff from all over the country talked about ways in which the charism and spirituality of Fr. Dehon could be more fully expressed in their local communities.

"When I came to the first Mission Education Conference, it was led primarily by the SCJs ññ most of the organizers were SCJs, the speakers were SCJs," said an SCJ participant. "But this time the laity were such a strong force, doing many of the presentations, the prayer services, the basic organizing. It is so exciting for me to see how the Dehonian charism is spreading beyond us (the SCJs). It is a wonderful reminder that his charism is not something just for us SCJs, but for the whole church."

The Dehonian Affiliates Committee, directed by Fr. Tony Russo, plans to continue the conference on a biennial basis. The next one will be hosted by St. Josephís Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Dos de estos testimonios de presentación fueron hechos por ministros laicos compartiendo las historias de SCJs que han fallecido, pero son cariñosamente recordados: P. Tom Sheehy, que realizó su ministerio en Texas, y el P. Bill De Witte, quien estuvo activo en Ottawa, Canadá.

Un pequeño grupo de actividades fueron también una parte de la conferencia. Era tiempo para conectar con la gente que hace un trabajo similar y para compartir ideas. Especialistas en computación de Mississippi estuvieron hablando con sus contraparte en South Dakota y Wisconsin. Maestros de Houston, Texas se encontraron con maestros de Chamberlain, South Dakota, así como de Mississippi y Wisconsin. "Cuando vine a la primera Conferencia de Misión Educativa, estaba dirigida principalmente por los SCJ, la mayoría de los organizadores eran SCJ, los conferencistas eran SCJ," dijo un participante SCJ. "Pero esta vez los laicos fueron como una gran fuerza, haciendo muchas de las presentaciones, los servicios de oración, la organización básica. Es muy excitante para mi ver como el carisma dehoniano se está expandiendo más allá de nosotros (los SCJ). Es algo maravilloso que su carisma no es algo solo para nosotros SCJ, sino para toda la Iglesia."

El Comité de Afiliados Dehonianos, dirigido por el P. Tony Russo, planea continuar la conferencia en un período bienal. La próxima será hospedada por la St. Joseph's Indian School en Chamberlain, South Dakota.
