Interview with Paul Grizzelle-Reid ESL Program Coordinator

Paul Grizzelle-Reid is the ESL Program (English as a Second Language) coordinator, that is held at Sacred Heart Monastery/Sacred Heart School of Theology in our US Province.

Furthermore, Paul is the community coordinator [superior] of the Sacred Heart Monastery and director of formation for the seminarians who live at Sacred Heart School of Theology, and come from many dioceses in United States.
 

1.- Paul, let's talk about you. Tell us about your life in the SCJ Congregation

    I have been a religious for 32 years in the Congregation and I must say I have been very pleased and happy with all my assignments.  I was very fortunate in my young years in the Province to meet many wonderful German priests who were my teachers and mentors.  I remember especially Fr. Bernard Rotermann and Fr. Angelico Koller. Both of these men were instrumental about teaching me about the life of Fr. Dehon, the history of the Congregation and the charism of the work of the Founder.

    I began my studies at Dehon Seminary of the Sacred Heart in Great Barrington, Masschusetts.  I spent two years in the seminary studying Greek, Latin, English, French, Hebrew.  The seminary was considered a school for "Adult Vocations."  At that time I was 22 years old.  After spending two years there, I entered the novitiate, made my vows, finished my college, completed my theology and went to work in Brownsville, Texas.

    The SCJs with whom I worked were supportive and very pastoral in their approach to menistry.  I learned a lot from them.  I have worked in our missions in Mississippi and South Dakota.  Currently I am the Director of the ESL Program in Hales Corners and am also the Coordinator of the Community.
 

2.- In the last few years many SCJs have attended the ESL Program. Most of them have come to learn English in preparation for work in our missions in Anglo-Speaking countries or to asssit them in their currents responsibilities. What's the main objective of the ESL Program as it relates tothe Congregation?

    In the last 15 years, over 300 SCJs have attended the ESL Program. Many of them have come here in preparation to work in the English speaking missions of South Africa, India, and the Philippines.  In some cases they have come to improve their English to work in Cameroon where both English and French are spoken.  Many students come to the program to improve their English to complete their educational studies in Rome or in other countries.  Since many of the textbooks are written in English, it is important for them to have a reading knowledge of the language.

    The main objective of the ESL Program is to help the Congregation prepare men to work in the English speaking missions.  A second objective is to introduce all the members of the Congregation to each other in an American cultural setting.  It is important to note that the
cultural setting takes place in the religious atmosphere where daily mass, prayer and adoration play a very, very important role in the life of all the students.

    One outgrowth of the program is that the members of the North American Province and the Canadian regions get the opportunity to meet so many of our students.  Both the Canadian members and the American members offer hospitality during the vacation time for the students to visit with them.  In so doing, the ESL students learn about our North American religious life and culture.  The ESL students bring their gifts and culture to their North American brothers.

3.-  Most know about the ESL Summer Program, but this course works year round. Can you explain to us how the the ESL year works?

    The ESL Summer Program begins on July 1st and ends on September 30th.  It is important that the student arrives in the United States on or about June 25th.  These early days of arrival allow him to adjust to the religious climate and the atmosphere of the Community.  It also allows him the opportunity to appreciate the expectations of the program.  During those three months the students are exposed to an intensive, reading, writing and speaking program.  Within the first two weeks, students become leaders of the daily prayers, adoration and mass.  They also have the opportunity to spend an hour a day in practicing liturgical language. The ESL Program can also be a sabbatical period for SCJ members.  The sabbatical could be one semester or a whole year.  The semester program begins on or about January 10th through May 5th or August 25th through December 10th.

4.- Although the ESL Program is a scholastic program, 'the ESL experience' is more than scholastic teaching of English. Can you talk us about this 'ESL experience'?

    The ESL experience is more than the scholastic teaching of English. Basically, it is the coming together of SCJs throughout the world to live in community.  We pray the daily office, celebrate mass, celebrate daily adoration, celebrate monthly birghdays of all the members, meet officially for a "Convivum", go to the theater, visit museums, and many other places of culture and interest.

    The ESL experience in reality helps us to appreciate "We the Congregation in Service to the Missions."  In some ways, living the ESL Program reflects our international college in Rome.  Many nations, many cultures, many languages come together and live out the charism of Fr.
Dehon.

1. - Paul, parliamo di lei. Ci racconti della sua vita nella Congregazione SC

Sono religioso da 32 anni nella Congregazione e devo dire che sono stato molto felice e soddisfatto in tutti i miei impegni. Sono stato molto fortunato nei miei giovani anni nella Provincia per aver incontrato molti preti tedeschi meravigliosi che sono stati miei insegnanti e miei educatori. Io ricordo specialmente P. Bernardo Rotermann e P. Angelico Koller. Ambedue mi hanno fatto conoscere la vita di P. Dehon, la storia della Congregazione ed il carisma del Fondatore.

Ho iniziato i miei studi al Seminario Dehon S. Cuore a Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Ho passato due anni in seminario a studiare greco, latino, inglese, francese, ebraico. Il seminario era considerato una scuola per " Vocazioni Adulte". Allora avevo 22 anni. Dopo avere passato due anni là, sono entrato al noviziato, ho fatto i miei voti, ho finito l'università e, dopo aver completato la teologia, sono andato a lavorare a Brownsville, Texas.

Gli SCJ, con cui ho lavorato, mi hanno sostenuto con il loro stile pastorale nel ministero. Ho imparato molto da loro. Ho lavorato nelle nostre missioni in Mississippi e Sud Dakota. Attualmente sono il Direttore del Corso di ESL in Hales Corners e anche il Coordinatore della Comunità.

2. - In questi ultimi anni molti SCJ hanno frequentato il Corso di ESL. La maggior parte di loro sono venuti ad imparare inglese per prepararsi al loro lavoro nelle nostre missioni in paesi Anglofoni o per svolgere le loro attività. Quale è l'obiettivo principale dell'ESL in riferimento alla Congregazione?

Negli ultimi 15 anni, più di 300 SCJ hanno frequentato il Corso di ESL. Molti di loro sono venuti qui per prepararsi a lavorare nelle missioni anglofone del Sud Africa, India, e Filippine. In certi casi sono venuti a migliorare il loro inglese per lavorare in Camerun dove si parla inglese e francese. Molti studenti sono venuti a migliorare il loro inglese per completare i loro studi a Roma o in altri paesi. Siccome molti testi sono scritti in inglese, è importante per loro avere una conoscenza della lettura della lingua.

L'obiettivo principale del Corso di ESL è aiutare la Congregazione a preparare uomini adatti a lavorare nelle missioni anglofone. Un secondo obiettivo è aiutare tutti i membri della Congregazione a conoscersi a vicenda in un quadro culturale americano. È importante notare che il quadro culturale viene colto in una atmosfera religiosa dove la messa quotidiana, la preghiera e l'adorazione hanno un ruolo molto importante nella vita di tutti gli studenti.

Un altro aspetto del Corso è che i membri della Provincia americana del nord e delle regioni canadesi trovano l'opportunità di incontrare molti dei nostri studenti. I membri canadesi ed i membri americani offrono l'ospitalità durante il tempo di vacanza agli studenti che vogliono visitarli. In tal modo, gli studenti di ESL vengono a conoscere la vita religiosa e la cultura nordamericana. Gli studenti di ESL portano i loro doni e la loro cultura ai loro fratelli nordamericani.

3. - Molti conoscono il corso estivo dell'ESL, ma questo corso funziona tutto l'anno. Può spiegarci come funziona l'ESL durante l'anno?

Il Corso estivo ESL comincia il 1° luglio e finisce il 30 settembre. È importante che lo studente arrivi negli Stati Uniti verso il 25 giugno . Questi primi giorni gli permettono di adattarsi al clima religioso e all'atmosfera della Comunità. Gli permettono anche di valutare ciò che offre corso. Durante tre mesi gli studenti sono esposti ad un lavoro intensivo di lettura, scrittura e dialogo in lingua. Entro le prime due settimane, gli studenti sono in grado di dirigere le preghiere quotidiane, l'adorazione e messa. In tal modo hanno anche l'opportunità nel praticare la lingua liturgica un'ora al giorno. Il Corso di ESL può essere anche un periodo sabbatico per i membri SCJ. Il periodo sabbatico potrebbe estendersi per un semestre o un anno intero. Il programma semestrale comincia verso il 10 gennaio fino al 5 maggio oppure dal 25 agosto al 10 dicembre.

4. - Anche se il Corso di ESL è un programma scolastico, 'l'esperienza ESL' è più dell'insegnamento scolastico dell'inglese. Può parlarci di questo 'esperienza' ESL?

L'esperienza di ESL è più dell'insegnamento scolastico dell'inglese. È fondamentalmente, l'incontro di SCJ di tutto il mondo per vivere in comunità. Noi recitiamo l'ufficio quotidiano, celebriamo la messa, facciamo l'adorazione quotidiana, i ritiri mensile di tutti i membri, ci incontriamo ufficialmente per un " Convivum "; si vada a teatro, si visitano musei, e molti altri luoghi di cultura ed di interesse.

L'esperienza ESL è un vero aiuto per apprezzare il "Noi la Congregazione a Servizio della Missione". In qualche modo, la vita del Corso di ESL riflette quella del nostro collegio internazionale di Roma. Molte nazioni, molte culture, molte lingue sono riunite e vivono il carisma di P. Dehon.

1.- Paul, hablemos acerca de ti. Dinos algo sobre tu vida en la Congregación SCJ

He sido religioso por 32 años en la Congregación y debo decir que he estado muy complacido y feliz con todas mis responsabilidades. Fui muy afortunado en mis años de juventud en la Provincia de encontrar muchos sacerdotes alemanes maravillosos, quienes fueron mis maestros y mentores. Recuerdo especialmente al P. Bernard Rotermann y al P. Angelico Koller. Ambos fueron instrumentos que me enseñaron sobre la vida del P. Dehon, la historia de la Congregación y el carisma del Fundador.

Comencé mis estudios en el Seminario Dehoniano del Sagrado Corazón en Great Barrington, Masschusetts. Pasé dos años en el seminario estudiando Griego, Latín, Inglés, Francés y Hebreo. El seminario estaba considerado como unna escuela para "Vocaciones Adultas". En esa época yo tenía 22 años. Después de pasar dos años allí, entré en el noviciado, hice mis votos, terminé la secundaria, completé mis estudios de teología y fui a trabajar en Brownsville, Texas.

Los SCJ con los que trabajé fueron un gran apoyo y muy pastorales en dsu trabajo ministerial. Aprendí mucho de ellos. He trabajado he nuestras misiones en Mississippi y South Dakota. Actualmente soy el Director del Programa ESL en Hales Corners y tambié superior de la comunidad.

2.- Durante los últimos años muchos SCJ han asistido al Programa ESL. La mayoría de ellos vienen apreder inglés en preparación para atender nuestras misiones en los países Anglo-parlantes o para obtener un mejor desarrollo en sus responsabilidades actuales. ¿Cuál es el principal objetivo del Programa ESL de cara a la Congregación?

Durante los últimos 15 años más de SCJ han asistido al programa ESL. Muchos de ellos han venido aquí para prepararse para trabajar en las misiones anglo parlantes de Sur África, India, y las Filipinas. En algunos casos han venido a mejorar su inglés para trabajar enn Camerún donde se hablan tanto el inglés como el francés.

Muchos estudiantes vienen al programa para mejorar su inglés para complementar sus estudios en Roma o en otros países. Ya que muchos de los libros de texto están escritos en inglés, es importante para ellos tener un conocimiento de lectura de la lengua.

Al hacer esto, los estudiantes del ESL aprenden sobre nuestra vida religiosa y la cultura Norte America. Los estudiantes del ESL traen sus regalos y cultura a sus hermanos norteamerica.

3.- La mayoría de la gente conoce acerca del Programa de Verano del ESL, pero este curso funciona durante todo el año. ¿Puedes explicarnos el desarrollo anual del Programa ESL?

El programa de Verano del ESL comienza el 1 de Julio y termina el 30 de Septiembre. Es importante que los estudiantes lleguen a los Estados Unidos alrededor del 25 de Junio. Estos primeros días de llegada a los Estados Unidos les permiten ajustarse a al clima religioso y a la atmósfera de la comunidad. También les da la oportunidad para apreciar las expectativas del programa. Durante esos tres meses los estudiantes son expuestos a un curso intensivo de lectura, escritura y conversación. Durante los dos primeros meses los estudiantes se convierten en guías de las oraciones diarias, adoración y misa. También tienen la oportunidad de pasar una hora diaria en la práctica del lenguaje litúsrgico. El programa ESL también puede ser un período sabático para los miembros SCJ. El sabático podría ser un semestre o todo un año. El programa semetral comienza hacia el 10 de Enero hasta ek 5 de Mayo o desde el 25 de Agosto hasta el 10 de Diciembre.

4.- Aunque el Programa ESL es un programa escolástico, la "experiencia ESL" es más que un programa escolástico de enseñanza del inglés. ¿Puedes hablarnos sobre esta "experiencia ESL"?

La experiencia ESL es más que una enseñánza escolástica del inglés. Básicamente, es el encuentro de SCJs de todo para vivir en comunidad. Rezamos el oficio diario, celebramos la eucarístia, celebramos la adoración, celebramos los cumpleaños mensualmente de los todos los miembros, nos encontramos oficialmente para una "Convivum", vamos al teatro, visitamos museos, y muchos otros lugares de interés cultural y entretenimiento.

La experiencia ESL nos ayuda en realidad a apreciar el "Nosotros, Congregación en Servicio de la Misión." En distintas formas, la vivencia del Programa ESL refleja nuestro colegio internacional en Roma. Muchas naciones, muchas culturas, muchos idiomas se encuentran y viven el carisma del P. Dehon.
