Yesterday, 17th October 2001, at approximately 7.25, Fr Giuseppe Pierantoni, 44, Italian, was kidnapped by between 10ÀÜ15 heavily armed men from his convento in Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao. He had just finished celebrating Mass for the local people and was having his supper in the convento at the time. Fr. Beppe, as he is known, has been working in Mindanao for over 10yrs. His first assignment was in the parish of Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, followed by Bacolod, Lanao del Norte and then for the last 3yrs in Dimataling, along with Fr. Janusz Burzawa scj.

Fr. Beppe is a very quiet and gentle man who is very serious about his commitment to the people wherever he is assigned. In particular he shows special concern for the individual person who approaches him with any kind of problem and is always ready to listen and to help. He has always been assigned to parishes where there has been a strong Muslim presence but we have always experienced good relations and have always felt welcome.

We, the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, are very sad and worried about the situation of our brother priest. We plead with those who have taken him to please release him unharmed as quickly as possible. We are calling on the goodness of your humanity. By your actions you are bringing pain to many people, not least his mother, father and sister who are in Italy. You are bringing shame on the Filipino people, both Muslim and Christian, who are known for their kindness and hospitality towards foreigners. Fr. Beppe has never harmed anyone we cannot understand why you have done this to him.

We do not know why you have kidnapped a priest, especially as the Church in the Philippines and particularly in Pagadian has been very active in seeking peace and justice for all members of society, whatever their religion or tribe. We ask you to look into your hearts and see if you cannot find some speck of the greatness and mercy of the God that we believe in.

We are grateful to all those in the Philippines, especially in the diocese of Pagadian who are working so hard to resolve this situation. We pray that Allah/Father will help soften the hearts of those people who have kidnapped Fr. Beppe that they may turn from violence and redirect their energies towards building a community of peace and justice for all the people of Mindanao, according to the will of God.

Hier, le 17 octobre 2001, vers 19h25, le P. Giuseppe Pierantoni, 44 ans, originaire d'Italie, a été enlevé par 10 à 15 hommes armés de son presbytère à Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao. Il venait de terminer la célébration de la Messe pour les paroissiens et dînait au presbytère. Le P. Beppe, comme on l'appelait, travaille à Mindanao depuis plus de 10 ans, d'abord dans la paroisse de Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, puis à Bacolod, Lanao del Norte et, ces trois dernières années, à Dimataling, en compagnie du P. Janusz Burzawa scj.

Le P. Beppe est un homme calme et aimable, qui s'engage totalement auprès des gens là où il est assigné. Il se préoccupe particulièrement de la personne qui s'approche de lui avec un quelconque problème, toujours prêt à écouter et à aider. Il a toujours travaillé dans des paroisses à forte présence musulmane, mais il a toujours entretenu de bonnes relations et s'est toujours senti le bienvenu.

Nous, Prêtres du Sacré-Coeur, sommes infiniment tristes et préoccupés sur le sort de notre frère, le Père Pierantoni. Nous demandons à ceux qui l'ont séquestré de ne pas lui faire de mal et de le relâcher au plus vite. Nous en appelons à votre sens humanitaire. En vous comportant ainsi  vous faites souffrir beaucoup de monde, notamment les proches de Père Giuseppe, qui sont en Italie, et jetez le discrédit sur la population philippine, aussi bien musulmane que chrétienne, reconnue pour sa gentillesse et son hospitalité à l'égard des étrangers. Le P. Beppe n'a jamais fait de mal à quiconque et nous ne comprenons pas pourquoi vous agissez ainsi à son égard.

Nous ignorons pourquoi vous avec enlevé un prêtre car l'Église aux Philippines, en particulier à Pagadian, est très active dans sa recherche de paix et de justice en faveur de toutes les composantes de la société, quelle que soit leur religion ou leur tribu. Nous vous demandons de scruter votre coeur pour y trouver un peu de la grandeur et de la pitié du Dieu en qui nous croyons.

Nous remercions tous ceux qui, aux Philippines et spécialement dans le diocèse de Pagadian, travaillent sans relâche pour arriver à une solution. Nous prions Allah/Père pour qu'il change les coeurs de ceux qui ont enlevé le P. Beppe, afin qu'ils se détournent de la violence pour mettre toutes leurs énergies à bâtir une communauté de paix et de justice pour toute la population de Mindanao, selon la volonté de Dieu.

Aveva appena finito di celebrare la Messa per la gente del posto e stava facendo la cena in comunità.

P. Beppe, come è conosciuto, lavora a Mindanao da 10 anni. Il suo primo impegno è stato nella parrocchia di Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, e poi a Bacolod, Lanao del Norte e infine gli ultimi tre anni a Dimataling, insieme a P. Janusz scj Burzawa, scj.

P. Beppe è un uomo molto tranquillo e gentile, sempre molto impegnato per le persone che gli sono affidate. In particolare ha mostrato una preoccupazione speciale per tutti quelli che si avvicinano a lui con qualche problema ed è pronto ad ascoltare ed aiutare sempre. È sempre stato inviato in parrocchie dove c'è una forte presenza musulmana, ma abbiamo sempre esperimentato buone relazioni e ci siamo sempre sentiti ben accolti.

Noi, Preti del Sacro Cuore di Gesù, siamo molto tristi e preoccupati per la situazione del nostro confratello.

Noi supplichiamo coloro che l'hanno sequestrato di rilasciarlo incolume il più rapidamente possibile. Noi facciamo appello ai vostri sentimenti di bontà e di umanità. Con i vostri comportamenti voi recate dolore a molte persone, tra cui sua madre, suo padre e sua sorella che sono in Italia. Voi gettate il discredito sulla popolazione filippina, sia musulmana che cristiana, nota per la gentilezza e l'ospitalità verso gli stranieri. P. Beppe non ha mai fatto del male a nessuno per cui non comprendiamo perché abbiate fatto questo.

Noi non sappiamo perché abbiate preso in ostaggio un prete, dal momento che la Chiesa nelle Filippine e particolarmente a Pagadian è stato molto attiva nel ricercare pace e la giustizia per tutti i membri della società, a qualsiasi religione o tribù appartengano. Noi vi preghiamo di ascoltare il vostro cuore e vedere se non possiate trovarvi un briciolo della grandezza e della misericordia di Dio nel quale noi crediamo.

Noi siamo grati a tutti quelli che nelle Filippine, specialmente nella diocesi di Pagadian stanno lavorando per chiarire questa situazione. Noi preghiamo che Allah/Padre voglia intenerire il cuore delle persone che hanno rapito P. Beppe.

Possano rifuggire dalla violenza e mettere le loro energie a servizio della costruzione di una comunità di pace e di giustizia per gli abitanti di Mindanao, secondo la volontà di Dio.
