[Editor's note: The following is taken from a fax to the Superior General sent by the provincial superior of the Argentine SCJ Province commenting on the flooding in Chaco caused by recent heavy rains.]The province is going to celebrate our 15th anniversary. We will celebrate it simply and austerely, since we are very concerned about the situation in the country due to the recent flooding, especially in the Littoral area. I won't say much about it here since Delio, or perhaps Carlos Alberto, may have read about it on the internet.
I have just returned from visiting the area. It is a disaster! The harvest it lost, the animals were drowned in many areas, and the people pull out the living ones to kill them and sell them cheap.
The people from our parishes are being assisted by the city councils and the local Caritas organization. It has dealt with the emergency, although the politicians always mange to interfere..... Our brothers are a little tired, but they continue working and remain calm, but it is so difficult..... I have proposed a campaign Chaco's flood relief fund through the Missions Secretary in Milan. It will be our own parish Caritas organization that will receive the donations. Actually the main problem will come later. The fields are lost for now, and hunger looms. That's the reason for the fund, to help buy food, medicines, etc.
Our scj parishes (Malagueño, V. Carlos Paz, Villa Celina, Sarmiento, Pérez, Maciel) are all sending supplies to the affected areas. The immediate direct contact between the scjs was very interesting.
Please pray that the rains won't overflow the Paraná river, otherwise Resistenica will be flooded.
Atilio Zorzetti (AU)02/05/98
At the moment the only way to get there is by boat. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency. Our brothers are, for the moment, completely isolated, although the house they now live in has so far been preserved. However, at Christmas time they had to change their residence when it was flooded out.
The three scjs have been in Ecuador since last October 12th. The congregation returned 101 years after its expulsion from Ecuador after appeals by the local bishops,. They went back to Baía de Caraquez where Bishop Grison worked, and where there still exists the School that he founded. This time the scjs came to work in the periphery of the town and in the surrounding rural communities -- as far away as 16 miles from town. People are very poor but very happy to have the Priests of the Sacred Heart with them.
The only condition placed on our return was that we work with the poor. This condition assists our scjs to walk with, suffer with, and to be in solidarity with the poor; supporting then in their faith, and hopes for a better future.
Because of the situation, Fr. General was in communication with Fr. Nazario Merino, provincial treasurer of the Spanish Province who reported on the situation. Fr. General also phoned the scjs in Ecuador expressing on behalf of the entire congregation our support and solidarity with them during these difficult times.
Born on October 29, 1948 in Poland. He made his first profession on January 13, 1965, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1974.
