The following was submitted by Maurice Légaré (CG) a member of the Ad Hoc Commission on Government.The study committee on government structures met in Rome January 26 to 29, 1998. Presided over by Umberto Chiarello (CU), the committee is composed of: Simon-Reyes (HI), Piet Schellens (NE), Paulo Hülse (BM) and Maurice Légaré (CG). A small welcoming celebration with Fr. General and members of the curia took place on Sunday evening (January 25, 1998).
The commission spent some time studying what was said about governmental structures at the XXth General Chapter, as well as, the reactions from various provinces and regions to the provisional text of the Global Plan: We the Congregation in Service to the Mission.
According to its mandate, the commission plans to ask for input from interested parties, for example: the territorial communities in India, The Philippines and Madagascar; the general council; small provinces, etc. The commission is expected to submit a report with alternative proposals to the meeting of provincials with the general administration scheduled to take place in Rome November 3-13, 1998.

Congratulations to the new South African Provincial administration taking office on February 2, 1998, and a word of gratitude to those who served during Adam Musialek's first term.*Recall that Zolile Mpambani was chosen to replace Bishop Tomé Makhwéliha (MOZ) on the general council, responsible for the African geographical zone. The South African province will soon chose a council replacement.

Umberto Chiarello (CU) reports that his visit to the Mozambique region to attend the episcopal ordination of Fr. Tomé Makhwéliha (MOZ) went well. This visit also afforded him the opportunity to attend the regional scj assembly where plans for the creation of the scj province of Mozambique were under discussion.Zolile Mpambani (CU), the new general councilor representing Africa, was also present. Zolile is finishing up his affairs in South Africa, and will move to Rome in February. His first task will be to attend Italian language school before taking up his full time council duties.
