INTRODUCTION

During his long association with the students of St. John's College in San Quentin, first as Superior and later as priest and friend of those who were his students, Fr. Dehon participated in all the meetings with former students until 1924.

What he offers is much like On-going Formation. What did he teach them? These meetings and lessons, which appear in the chronicles of these meetings of the alumni, will inform us of what especially was his intention since the establishment of St. John's Institute in San Quentin with the formation of the youth in that city.

I hope this small work will help, with Fr. Dehon's example, to guide our work and commitment with today's youth in our formation programs.

FIRST MEETING OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FROM ST. JOHN'S

9/29/1884

The meeting takes place at the college. There are 24 people in attendance. Among those whom we can recall are Louis Marechal, Albert Delloue, Charles and Emil Black, Charles Geoffroy, Henry Leduc and Augustine Waguet. The invitation was made by a provisional committee under the leadership of Louis Marechal.

MEETING AGENDA

1. Reception on the main patio of the College.

2. Mass celebrated by Abbe Lefevre.

3. Discourse by Abbe Rigualt, professor of Rhetoric.

His talk exhorted the alumni to continue being good Christians and apostles in their families and society; to be defenders of the faith that was being attacked in those times.

4. At noon, the main session begins in the hall at the College, under the leadership of Fr. Dehon, Honorary President, and Louis Marechal, the president who opened the gathering with a brief presentation explaining the motives for those wishing to establish the Alumni Association. The hope was to conserve the spirit of family with the alumni. This had always been one of the characteristics of the school. Another hope was to inspire the desire to do well and practice the faith despite the difficulties in which they were living. It was important to see a Christian education that formed brave Frenchmen who could love God and the Church with a sense of honor.

Later, there was a discussion about the statutes and election of the leadership. Those elected were Louis Marechal, president, Albert Delloue, vice-president, Charles Geoffroy, secretary, Charles Black, vice-secretary, and Silvano Boucquey, treasurer.

A meal of honor followed the elections. The new alumni association was toasted. Fr. Dehon intervened but his comments were not published in the minutes of the gathering. It is indicated that he gave the same wise and prudent advice that came from the heart, just as when these men were his students. (AD.B. 90/ 1 inv. 0112800).

El P. Dehon durante su larga vida con los alumnos del Colegio S. Juan de S. Quintín, primero como Superior, y después como Padre y amigo de quienes habían sido sus discípulos participando en todas las asambleas que los antiguos alumnos realizaron hasta 1924.

Lo que él hace es como una Formación Permanente, ¿qué es lo que les iba enseñando?

Estas orientaciones y enseñanzas, que aparecen en las crónicas de estas asambleas de antiguos alumnos, nos lo irán diciendo, especialmente lo que él pretendió con la fundación del Instituto de San Juan en San Quintín, a través de la formación de la juventud de aquella ciudad.

Espero que este pequeño trabajo pueda ayudar, a ejemplo del P. Dehon, a orientar nuestro quehacer y compromiso con los jóvenes de hoy en nuestros centros de formación.

Primera reunión de la Asociación de ex alumnos del S. Juan 29 de septiembre de 1884

Tiene lugar en los locales del mismo Colegio.

Son los asistentes 24 personas, entre los que podemos recordar a Luis Maréchal, Alberto Delloue, Carlos y Emilio Black, Carlos Geoffroy, Enrique Leduc y Agustín Waguet.

La invitación fue hecha por un comité provisional, al parecer bajo la presidencia de Luis Maréchal.

Programa del encuentro

1. Recepción en el patio principal del Colegio.

2. Santa Misa presidida por el abbé Lefèvre.

3. Discurso del abbé Rigault, profesor de Retórica.

Puso de relieve el que los ex alumnos han de seguir siendo buenos cristianos y apóstoles en su familia y en la sociedad; defensores de la fe tan atacada en estos tiempos.

4. Al mediodía comienza la sesión principal en el salón del Colegio, bajo la presidencia del P. Dehon, Presidente de Honor, y del Luis Maréchal, el Presidente, que abre la sesión con un breve discurso, explicando los motivos por los que se desea fundar la Asociación: Conservar el espíritu de familia entre los ex alumnos, que siempre había sido una de las características del Colegio y animar el deseo de hacer el bien y practicar la fe a pesar de las dificultades que estaban viviendo. Es preciso hacer ver que la educación cristiana forma franceses valientes y que, sin faltar al honor se puede amar a Dios y a la Iglesia.

A continuación se discutió el proyecto de estatutos y se eligió la directiva, siendo elegidos: Luis Maréchal presidente, Alberto Delloue vicepresidente, Carlos Geoffroy secretario, Carlos Black vicesecretario y Silvano Boucquey tesorero.

Sigue la comida de honor en la que se brindó por la nueva asociación. Intervino también el P. Dehon, pero no se publicó su discurso en las actas del encuentro. Se indica que les dio los mismos sabios y prudentes consejos, salidos del corazón, que tanto bien les hacían cuando aún eran alumnos (AD.B. 90/ 1 inv. 0112800).

Nei lunghi anni con gli studenti del Collegio S. Giovanni a S. Quintino, prima come Superiore e più tardi come prete ed amico di quelli che erano stati i suoi studenti, P. Dehon partecipò a tutte le riunioni dei primi studenti fino a 1924.

Quella che lui offre è molto simile ad una Formazione Permanente.. Cosa insegnò loro? Questi incontri e lezioni che appaiono nelle cronache delle riunioni degli ex-alunni ci fanno conoscere quella che in modo speciale era stata la sua intenzione fin dalla fondazione dell'Istituto S. Giovanni a S. Quintino con la formazione della gioventù in quella città.

Spero che questo piccolo lavoro aiuterà, sull'esempio di P. Dehon, a guidare il nostro lavoro ed impegno con la gioventù di oggi nei nostri corsi di formazione.

La riunione ha luogo al collegio. Ci sono 24 persone presenti. Fra quelli che si possono ricordare ci sono: Louis Marechal, Albert Delloue, Charles ed Emil Black, Charles Geoffroy, Henri Leduc ed Augustine Waguet. Il discorso è stata una esortazione agli ex-alunni perché continuino ad essere i buoni Cristiani ed apostoli nelle loro famiglie e nella società; e ad essere difensori della fede che viene spesso attaccata.

4. A mezzogiorno, la sessione principale comincia nella sala del Collegio, sotto la direzione di P. Dehon, Presidente Onorario, e Louis Marechal, il presidente che ha aperto la seduta con una breve presentazione che spiega i motivi per cui si desidera costituire l'Associazione degli Ex-alunni. La speranza è di conservare lo spirito di famiglia tra gli ex-alunni. Questa era sempre stata una delle caratteristiche della scuola. Un'altra speranza era di ispirare il desiderio di fare il bene e di praticare la fede nonostante le difficoltà nelle quali si stanno attraversando. È importante consolidare l'istruzione cristiana che ha formato francesi coraggiosi capaci di amare Dio e la Chiesa con senso di onore.

Poi c'è la discussione sugli statuti e l'elezione dei dirigenti. Gli eletti sono stati Louis Marechal, presidente, Alberto Delloue, vicepresidente, Charles Geoffroy, segretario, Charles Black, vice-segretario, e Silvano Boucquey, tesoriere.

Un pranzo di onore segue le elezioni. Si inneggia alla nuova associazione degli ex-alunni. P. Dehon interviene ma le sue osservazioni non sono registrate nei verbali dell'incontro. Si sottolinea che egli ha dato lo stesso consiglio saggio e prudente che è venuto dal cuore, dal momento che quegli uomini sono stati i suoi studenti. (AD.B. 90 / 1 inv. 0112800).
