1.14 Letter of 2/23/1881 to Novice Legrand-

"Heart of Jesus, our love.

I am writing from the library of the university in the midst of over 30 students, sending you our greetings and those of Abbe Debout who celebrates his names day. Abbe Debout is here with me and asks me to tell you how much he appreciated when during supper you came to speak with the Superior to tell him about someone who was ill at the novitiate. He is not angry that you left him alone to be with Fr. Augustine. On the contrary, he all appreciates your prayers and send you fraternal greetings and sends wishes from the heart of a priest and friend can offer.

For my part, my dear Father, I wish tot ell you that I am grateful for the place you have put me in your prayers. Unfortunately, I am not as generous and inconsistent ( like in the novitiate). But you know that I am always united with you in this spirit of union with all of my brothers and sisters in the Heart of Jesus. This prevents me from falling deeper and being rejected. Tomorrow, I will not forget to pray to St. Matthias and ask my friends to support me. If you had been here, you would have been able to a large portion and make good propaganda for the devotion to St. Joseph and the other saints. I believe that with difficulty one can find a group of young people who are holy and worthy of these aspects. But I serve only that appreciate less the work. I pray that I may be converted in the long run. If you can obtain this grace for me, I will be grateful eternally. Not only for myself but for the work that grows in spite of obstacles. In the meantime, I try to be a more ardent source of promotion. I am in support with you of this even in an imperfect way with the novena. I have also remembered to pray for Fr. Thaddeo who celebrates the anniversary of his first Mass." (50-AD. B. 19/4.3. INV, 248-27.)

Fr. Captier was ordained as a priest on February 24, 1874 (51- Cf. NQ.1, p. 503. note 59).

"Cuore di Gesù nostro amore.

Le scrivo dalla biblioteca dell'università tra più di 30 studenti, inviandole i miei saluti e quelli dell'Abbé Debout che ricorda il suo onomastico. L'Abbé Debout è qui con me e vuole che le dica quanto ha apprezzato il suo gesto, durante la cena, quando è andato a parlare con il Superiore di qualcuno che era ammalato al noviziato. Non è dispiaciuto del fatto che lo ha lasciato solo con P. Agostino. Al contrario, gradisce le sue preghiere e i suoi fraterni auguri e invia di cuore i suoi saluti di sacerdote e di amico.

Da parte mia, caro Padre, le posso dire che sono grato del fatto che lei mi ricorda nelle sue preghiere. Purtroppo io non sono tanto generoso e costante (come al noviziato). Però lei sa che sono sempre unito a lei nello spirito che ci unisce come fratelli e sorelle nel Cuore di Gesù.

Tutto ciò mi impedisce di cadere più in basso e di essere rifiutato. Domani non mancherò di pregare S. Mattia e chiedere le preghiere anche dei miei confratelli. Se lei fosse qui vedrebbe quanta parte viene offerta e potrebbe fare propaganda della devozione a S. Giuseppe e ad altri santi.

Penso che difficilmente altrove si troverà un gruppo di giovani che sono santi e sanno apprezzare questi aspetti. Ma io non so pienamente apprezzare tutto questo. Prego che mi possa convertire a lungo andare. Se lei potesse ottenermi questa grazia le sarei eternamente riconoscente.

Non solo per me, ma per l'Opera che cresce a dispetto degli ostacoli. Nel frattempo io cerco di essere un ardente propagatore. Mi unisco, anche se in forma imperfetta, alla sua novena. Mi sono ricordato anche di pregare per P. Taddeo che celebra l'anniversario della sua Prima Messa" (50-AD.B. 19/4.3. INV. 248-27).

"Cor Jesu suavissimum, amor noster"

"Le escribo desde la biblioteca de la universidad en medio de unos 30 estudiantes, enviándole mis felicitaciones y las del Abbé Debout con ocasión de su onomástico. El Abbé Debout está aquí conmigo y me pide decirle que lo ha edificado cuando usted durante la cena vino a hablar con el Superior sobre un enfermo en el noviciado. No está resentido con usted por haberlo dejado solo con el P. Agustín. De lo contrario; también se recomienda a sus buenas oraciones y le envía los votos más fraternales que un corazón de un sacerdote y amigo le puede formular.

Por mi parte, muy querido Padre, quiero decirle que le estoy muy agradecido por el lugar que me da en sus oraciones. Desgraciadamente estoy siempre tan poco generoso y tan inconsecuente (como en el noviciado). Pero, usted lo sabe, estoy siempre unido con usted y esta unión con todos mis hermanos y hermanas en el Corazón de Jesús me impide sin duda de caer más bajo todavía y de ser finalmente rechazado. Mañana no me olvidaré de rezar a San Matías y haré rezar a mis amigos que desgraciadamente no edifico bastante. Si usted estuviera aquí podría sacar un gran partido y hacerse un gran propagandista de la devoción a San José y de otros santos. Creo que difícilmente se puede encontrar un grupo de jóvenes tan sólidamente piadosos y tan recomendables bajo todos los aspectos. Pero yo sirvo solamente para menospreciar la Obra. Espero sin embargo poder convertirme finalmente. Si usted me obtiene esto mañana, le quedaré eternamente agradecido. No solamente para mi mismo, sino también para la obra cuyo crecimiento obstaculizo, mientras tendría que ser el más ardiente propagandista. Estoy unido también, pero muy imperfectamente, con su novena. Tampoco me he olvidado de la recomendación del venerable P. Thadeo en cuanto al aniversario de su primera Misa..."
