Italy
An initiative undertaken by the community of "Casa S. Maria" in Pagliare, Italy has resulted in the dedication of an altar to our Bl. Juan María de la Cruz Méndez on March 25, 2001 in the shrine church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The shrine church, once part of the minor seminary, is frequented by people from Tronto Valley in the Marches. The people, some of whom were present at the solemn beatification ceremony of Bl. Juan María de la Cruz Méndez at St. Peter's in Rome, have shown up in great numbers in response to this gesture of affection and veneration toward our first martyr. They have made use of prayer cards and a special edition of the house magazine devoted to the person of the new Blessed.
Fr. Evaristo Alegría, vice-posulator general, presided at the solemn mass of dedication. It began with a procession to a side altar dedicated to the Blessed; there he placed a painting of the holy man. During his homily, Fr. Evaristo treated the person of Bl. Juan María and commented on the parable for that day, the story of the prodigal son, highlighting the theme of the merciful love of God the Father, a theme so dear to Fr Juan Méndez. After the homily, everyone moved to the side altar for the blessing of the painting and its incensing in veneration. After Mass, the faithful returned to kiss a relic of Fr. Juan María de la Cruz Méndez which will remain on the altar dedicated to him. The dedication of this altar in a church of the South Italian province is a sign that Bl. Juan María de la Cruz Méndez does not belong to the Spanish province alone but to the entire Ccongregation.
