"For unto us a son is given"

What's New?

Christmas 2001

On behalf of all who help to put our website together week in and week out we wish you God's blessings as the world celebrates the coming of the Prince of Peace. It is our deepest wish that message will joyfully enter the hearts of all of humanity as we look forward to 2002.

A Reminder

Our website will next be published on Saturday, January 12, 2002. We look forward to hearing from many of you then with your ideas and suggestions for our site. We especially encourage scjs from around the congregation to forward information to us on what is taking place in your area that might be of interest to the rest of the congregation and our readers.

What's Happening?

Congratulations

To Deacon André Luis Luna Granja, of the South Brazilian Province ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Dourados, MS,  by Bishop Alberto Johannes Först, Ocarm, of the diocese of Dourados on December 22, 2001.

Portugal

We now have the English and Italian translations from the meeting (December 3-4, 2001) of the Justice and Peace coordinators from the Southern SCJ European Provinces in Lisbon. It was in preparation for "Montreal 2002", as well as an opportunity to discuss the reality in which we live after the events of September 11th.

You may link here for the message from the Lisbon meeting to the Congregation, COMPROMETIDOS NUMA NOVA CIVILIZAÇÃO, for now it is only in Portuguese, but we will have translations in other languages available soon.

Rome

The 2003 General Chapter Preparatory Commission met in Rome with members of the General Council from December 22 - 23, 2001 to formalize plans for the chapter; making more specific the theme for the chapter as well as working on an 'instrumentum laboris' for the provincial and regional chapters, as well as the district assemblies.

Members of this commission were appointed by the general superior during the meeting of the Major Superiors held in Rome last month (CF. News page for November 24, 2001). They are:

  • Zbigniew Bogacz -- provincial Poland
  • José Ornelas Carvalho -- provincial Portugal
  • Peter McKenna -- provincial English Canada
  • Claudio Weber -- provincial South Brazil
The Vidimus Dominum website on December 17th published a brief article on Dehonians: the new missionary plan defined summarizing the final statement from the Mission Conference held at the end of November in Rome.

Fr. Dehon's meetings with the students of St. John's Colleg

SIXTEENTH MEETING OF THE ALUMNI FROM ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE

09/17/1899 (AD. B. 107/1 inv. 0116203)

Fr. Dehon spoke during the luncheon. He said: "I attended some time ago the Congress of French Catholic Youth in Besancon. There were over 300 youth in attendance coming from all over France. 300 students!!! There were also 300 Macchabeans, 300 Spartans from Leonidas, and 300 members of the Teban Legion, all ready to obstruct the victory march of Islam. Then in Val-de-Bois I met some young people who came to hear a presentation on practical solutions for some social questions proposed by Mr. Harmel, whom you know well and whose name is worthy of mentioning. Youth from secular and church groups, youth involved in world events, filled with concerns and struggling with many difficulties. Youth gathered together in prayer from different life situations. All of these youth come from experiences of misery and attempt to make changes.

+Brother Vicente (Luis) García

Born: 22.11.1917
First Profession: 29.09.1941
Died: 06.12.2001 at Venta de Baños

Brother Luis was born on November 22,1917; he made his first profession on September 29, 1941 and his perpetual profession of vows on August 17, 1947.

Brother Luis was dedicated to the needs of various houses in the Province such as Puente la Reina and Salamanca. But he spent most of his time at Venta de Baños where he made many trips looking for benefactors who might assist the seminary. His outgoing happy manner was appreciated by all and helped him to carry out his work on behalf of the seminary. For the last few years he spent the winter months in Málaga and would return to Venta de Baños for the summer. Br. Luis valued community life and demonstrated it in small ways. His easy going manner and fraternal spirit will be missed.

We pray the Lord and the Virgin of Trejeda will receive him with open arms.
