“Il Secolo del martirio” 11
FR - Le martyre n’est pas uniquement un chapitre d’histoire ancienne. Le Saint-Père Jean-Paul II affirme qu’il est aussi un donné de notre temps, un phénomène même contemporain, et il est très important pour tous d’en prendre conscience. Il nous sollicite donc à renouveler le souvenir de « nos martyrs ».
Le prof. Andrea Riccardi a accueilli cette invitation et, en profitant de la documentation qu’il a trouvée dans les archives de la Commission Vaticane pour les « nouveaux martyrs », a publié un gros volume intitulé « Il Secolo del martirio ». Notre article n’est qu’un résumé des premiers chapitres de ce même volume.
EN - Martyrdom is not just a chapter of ancient history. Pope Wojtyla considers it a “contemporary reality” which he invites everyone to become aware of, urging us to recover the “memory” of the martyrs of our time. Professor Andrea Riccardi accepted this invitation and, availing himself of the vast documentation collected by the Vatican Commission on the “new martyrs”, published the results of his research in a large volume entitled “The Century of Martyrdom”. This article offers a summary of the first chapters of that volume.

FR - Le 18 décembre 2000 le Vatican annonçait la décision du Pape de procéder à la béatification de 233 chrétiens qui avaient été tués pendant la persécution espagnole de 1936. Promoteur de leur « cause » avait été le diocèse de Valence (Espagne). Dans son homélie pour la Messe de la béatification (11 et 12 mars), Jean-Paul II a souligné certains aspects de ces martyrs : ils étaient hommes et femmes d’âges et de conditions très différents, prêtres diocésains, religieux, religieuses, pères et mères de famille, jeunes laïcs, etc. « Ils ont été tués à cause du Christ et parce qu’ils étaient des membres très actifs de l’Eglise » (NB : ce texte a été repris de « L’Osservatore Romano », 11 et 12 marz 2001, p. 1).
EN - On December 18, 2000 the news was spread of the imminent beatification of 233 faithfuls, killed in the course of the Spanish persecution of 1936. Their “Cause” was set in motion by the diocese of Valencia. In his homily for the Holy Mass of the Beatification (March 11-12, 2001), the Holy Father described the characteristics of this group of martyrs: "They were men and women of all ages and states: diocesan priests, men and women religious, the fathers and mothers of families, young lay people. They were killed for being Christians, for their faith in Christ, for being active members of the Church". The text is taken from the Observatory Romano (March 11 and 12, 2001).

FR - Parmi ces 233 martyrs qui ont été béatifiés le 11 mars 2001, il y avait aussi un prètre « dehonien », p. Mariano García Méndez, en religion père Juan María de la Cruz. Il est, en effet, le premier dehonien proclamé « bienheureux ». Dans cet article, après quelques renseignements concernant la persécution espagnole, on parlera des vertus du nouveau « bienheureux » et des circonstances de son martyre.
EN - Among the “martyrs” blessed on March 11, 2001 there was also the “Dehonian” Fr. Mariano García Méndez, in religion JUAN MARIA DE LA CRUZ. In this article some information is provided on the Spanish persecution; there is also a brief description of the “spiritual figure” of the new “blessed” and an account the circumstances of his martyrdom.

FR - Dans ces derniers cahiers de « Dehoniana » (nn. 2000/3, 2001/1 et 2001/2) on a donné assez de renseignements concernant ce « bienheureux », étant le premier martyr de notre Congrégation. Mais on désire aussi connaître les aspects qui, dans le décret de son martyre, ont été davantage soulignés. Voici donc le texte de ce « décret », rédigé par la Congrégation des Saints elle-même.
EN - In the last issues of “Dehoniana” we published various articles which presented information regarding our Congregation's first Blessed. However, many people, when studying this figure, will also certainly want to know how he was described in the “decree” of his martyrdom.

IT - Oltre che parlare del “nostro Beato”, ci piace anche sentire come lui stesso ci parla attraverso alcuni suoi “Appunti spirituali”. Sono soltanto due brevi “saggi”: uno per il mese di marzo del 1928 (assieme a una “nota” per il 5 di agosto), mentre il secondo ci fa conoscere qualcosa dei suoi sentimenti e dei suoi propositi nel settembre del 1935.
EN - In addition to speaking of “our Blessed” we are also pleased to hear how he himself speaks to us through some of his “Spiritual Notes”. We present only two brief “essays”: his “notes”, one is for the month of March 1928 (together with a “note” for August 5), and the second lets us know something of his feelings and intentions in September of 1935.

IT - Il cammino umano e spirituale del Beato Juan M. de la Cruz va dalla famiglia alla parrocchia, dal seminario alla sua vita esemplare come religioso dehoniano. Perciò la conclusione alla quale egli arriva, col dono della vita per la sua fedeltà a Cristo, non appare come un “caso”, ma come il frutto maturo della sua vita di fede e di carità. Un itinerario, quindi, che viene proposto a tutti, come modello da imitare, ma anche come provocazione alla coerenza e alla fedeltà nell’amore a Cristo e alla sua Chiesa.
FR - On expose, dans cet article, l’itinéraire humain et spirituel du Biénheureux, à partir de sa famille, pour arriver au séminaire et à sa vie très exemplaire comme prêtre diocésain, et surtout comme religieux. Il est arrivé ainsi à l’oblation totale de lui-même, témoignage d’une fidélité jusqu’à la mort. Un itinéraire, donc, qui est comme un fruit mûri par une vie de foi et de charité. Et donc, maintenant, il est proposé à tous les croyants comme modèle à imiter et comme provocation à une vie cohérente jusqu’au bout dans l’amour au Christ et à son Eglise.

IT - La beatificazione del p. García Méndez ci ha spinto a “fare memoria” anche di altri confratelli che hanno testimoniato la loro fede in Cristo fino a dare la vita per il Vangelo. Qui viene proposta una serie di testi già anticipata via internet; ma a molti farà piacere ritrovare questi testi anche in “Dehoniana”.
EN - The Beatification of Fr. García Méndez has inspired us to “celebrate the memory” also of other brethren who have borne witness to their faith in Christ to the point of giving their life for the Gospel. Here a series of writings is proposed; they have already been put on internet but many people will be pleased to find them also in the “Dehoniana”.

IT - È una riflessione ad alta voce, di un confratello che da qualche anno vive in India con la responsabilità di “formatore” dei giovani religiosi indiani, e si interroga sull’esigenza e sulle modalità da dare alla vita religiosa, se veramente si vuole che sia incarnata e inculturata nei grandi valori della tradizione spirituale indiana. Egli riflette non solo sulla sua personale esperienza, ma anche sulle modalità e iniziative che diversi Istituti stanno esperimentando.
EN - This is the reflection made by one of our brethren who has been living in India for some years and who has the responsibility of “forming” young Indian religious. Here he questions himself on the demands and on the methods of giving to the religious life, if one truly wishes that life to be incarnated and inculturated in the great values of the spiritual tradition of that country. He reflects not only on his personal experience, but also on the methods and initiatives which various institutes are experiencing.

IT - Questo articolo è frutto di una riflessione sulla presenza della Congregazione nell’arcidiocesi di Yaoundé (Camerun). Tra le domande alle quali l’Autore intende rispondere: a) a quando risale la nostra presenza in quella diocesi; b) quali le ragioni che la giustificano; c) quanto è sentita l’esigenza di vivere e testimoniare la fedeltà al nostro carisma. Tre interrogativi che stimolano alla coerenza e alla generosità, per assicurare una “presenza significativa” in seno alla Chiesa locale.
EN - This article is the result of a reflection on the presence of the Congregation in the Archdioceses of Yaoundé (Cameroon). There are three questions to which the author intends to give an answer: a) When were we first present in that diocese? b) What are the reasons which justify our presence? c) How deeply was the need felt to live and bear witness to our faith in our charism? Three questions which stimulate coherence and generosity, to insure a “meaningful presence” within the local Church.

IT - I nostri confratelli sono solo da poco tempo in Ecuador. Però hanno già avuto modo di conoscere i tanti problemi di fronte ai quali si trova la gente del paese e spesso anche l’insensibilità del potere, quasi schiacciato sotto il peso di bisogni che superano ogni immaginazione. Di qui la situazione di continue tensioni e motivo di timori e di incertezze per il futuro del paese. Religiosi e gente del popolo sollecitano la solidarietà internazionale per eliminare tante ingiustizie.
EN - Our brethren have only been in Ecuador a short time, however they have already had the chance to learn not only of the many problems facing the people of that country, but also about how the insensitivity of those in power has left them almost crushed by a weight which exceeds all imagining. There exists, consequently, a situation of continual tension, with many fears and uncertainties for the future of the country. The religious and the people of the country urgently appeal for international assistance, in order to enable them to eliminate the many injustices.
