during their pastoral visit to India in early Mach.General Council
Members of the general administration have returned to Rome from their various visits around the congregation to begin their spring meetings. The council will meet until the start of the General Council in Recife, Brazil (May 16-26, 2000).
In his book "L'ouvre sociale du chanoine Dehon" [The social action of Canon Dehon] Robert Prelot treats the foundation of the St. John's College (and the emergence of the new Congregation) with only a few words: "It's not our task to treat here the considerable activity of Dehon concerning these two new foundations." (Prélot, p. 64) These words reveal a certain problem in the dehonian historiography: By the term ësocialí many authors of our century understand something quite different as Dehon himself would have intended. In this week's photo essay Stefan Tertünte continues his look at the foundation of St. John's College (CF. The foundation of St. Johnís College - a social commitment?).
We eat lunch at an Italian restaurant (71) that the young priests are familiar with. We are served macaroni and fried foods with California wine, a Chianti and an Asti. You'd think you were somewhere along the coast of Genoa. As Fr. Dehon's North American visit winds down he returns to San Francisco one last time. It is interesting to note that even in 1910 California wines were not only being served, but well received by Fr. Dehon as he compares the area to Genoa (Cf. Return to San Francisco).
